It is being said that Toyota is going to end its 3.0 liter D4D diesel engine for more efficient 2.4 and 2.8 liter four cylinder turbo diesel engines. Although downsizing does not mean the engines will be down on power as well. Toyota is claiming that these newer engines are not only better performers, but also fuel efficient than their predecessors. The focus has been to improve the driveability of their new engines.
News also reveals that the Japanese car maker is opting to drop the current thirsty 4000 cc V6 Hilux Vigo engine, in favor of 2.7 liter petrol four cylinder engine, with both auto and manual transmissions.
New 2.4 turbo diesel engine mated with a 5-speed transmission is reported to produce 165 bhp at 3600 rpm and 343 Nm of torque between 1400 to 3400 rpm. The same engine is also going to be offered with a 6 -speed auto gearbox. Auto is slightly down on power compared to manual (160 hp) but high on torque figures (400 Nm).
Whereas 2800cc 6-speed manual engine is reported to produce 174 hp and 420 Nm of torque. And 6-speed auto variant is going to produce same horsepower but 30 more Nm of torque.
New Vigo is expected to be unveiled in Thailand within the next couple of months.
