Karachi: A New Route for People’s Bus Service

Sindh transport division, at last, started taking steps to improve local transport in Karachi–Pakistan’s major transport hub. 

Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced on Tuesday that the Sindh transport service has come up with a new route for People’s Bus Service in Karachi.

Stretched 20 kilometers between Shireen Jinnah colony and Meer Naka Lyari, the new route goes through Boat basin, Mai Kolachi, native Jetty, and Mauripur Road.

Earlier, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah directed to rehabilitate the routes connected to People’s Bus Service. He also allocated 1.5 billion rupees to repair all the seven routes and ordered the transport division and local government department to complete the restoration in a swift manner.

People’s Bus Inauguration in Karachi

As per media details, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari inaugurated the much-awaited project.

Bus Routes

The bus has seven routes; however, only Route No. 1 is being launched today. A senior official of the Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA) told media that the buses will start running on the Route No. 1 from Model Colony to Merewether Tower via Shahrah-e-Faisal and II Chundrigar Road. “The minimum fare of the bus would be Rs. 25 while the maximum would be Rs. 55,” the official stated.

The Route No. 1 has 38 stations spread across 29.5 kilometers, and 30 buses will operate on it from 7am to 12am. A total of 240 red colored hybrid air-conditioned buses have been precured from China for the service.

Delays in the Project

At the inauguration ceremony, Sindh Minister for Labour & Human Resources, Saeed Ghani said that this project has faced many delays for many years. “We are now successful and I am very hopeful that people will start travelling in these buses,” Ghani said, adding that these are modern buses with very reasonable fare.
