On the road in their G-Wagon since 1989
Former airline executive Gunther Holtorf and his wife Christine left Germany in their Mercedes G-Wagon, bound for an 18-month tour of Africa but somehow, they kept on going and even after covering 500,000 miles, 74 years old Gunther, his wife and the G-Wagon are still going on strong without any sponsorship or factory but self-funded. On the road since 1989 and G-Wagen moves them on even today without any serious break down. And you know what, your exotic G63 or 65 would make them financially broke within days and would never move on. The olden W461 280 G-wagens were the …
Islamabad Jeep Club sets up summer camp 2012 at Mahodand Lake
IJCians have always had a very special spot for northern areas of Pakistan. This year again, when the weather started getting warmer, plans were being discussed to head north for our annual summer camp. Several venues were discussed for IJC summer camp and we were almost decided, when we got a call from the army personnel stationed in Kalam inviting IJC to the Swat Summer Festival (12th – 16th July) and asked us to hold a small event at Lake Mahodand. IJC has been in touch with army since the floods of 2010. Initially in connection with flood relief, when …
Watch a Land Cruiser and Nissan Patrol hoon in the Qatari Desert
Shot in the mesmerizing ‘Khor-al-Udeid’ desert which lies between Qatar and Saudia Arabia. It’s very rare to come across such a well produced video of these Sheikhs hooning their 4x4s in the desert. This is one such instance when these Qatari guys decided to head off in the desert and produce this video to promote the beauty that their country behold. A Land Cruiser and Nissan Patrol are driven with breath taking control and questionable judgment as on some scenes (2:00), it seems as if these guys had a death wish. Nonetheless, this is a surprisingly well produced video which …

IJC goes on Thal expedition
The idea of drive through Thal desert was floated by few friends at the time of Cholistan desert Rally. The intention was to see how feasible Thal would be in case a Rally is organized here. We had some readily info available from Salman Niazi and Jeepaholic but it still needed a thorough recce. Five 4x4s participated in the expedition: Shahid & Yousaf in Vigo Adnan and his Team in Vigo Ali Aden and his friends in Pajero 2.8 Rao Hamid and Kashif (Fihsak) in Pajero Asad & Ali Zafar in Pajero 3.0 v6 The teams were split in three …

Getting stuck because we like it
Freeways, highways, better urban road infrastructure was built to avoid getting stuck but we still do and it is annoying, frustrating, disturbing, boils up tempers – essentially, road rage is an exhibit of people being stuck in either slower traffic or one that moves none at all. Than there are folks who hunt for places to get stuck, it is considered the most fundamental part of the sport. How much experience, knowledge and skill you have is not judge on how well you avoid getting stuck in a terrain – but it is judged when you start digging your way …

One of the most unforgiving Rallies of Pakistan; 2012 Cholistan Rally is here
Before the advent of private media, there were motorsports events held in Pakistan but they had insignificant impact on the masses due to lack of coverage and exposure. Now though, since the media gained its freedom during the economic boom, motorsports in Pakistan have seen a bullish trend amongst the people as more and more people are inclined towards it. Internet has also played its part where Pakistan largest automotive community ‘PakWheels’ has portrayed the bright sight of motorsports amongst the masses. Apart from Extreme Autocross, Jhal Magsi Rally, there is another rally event held since a lot of time …

An off-roading trip to Kanrach and Tubko for star party
Most of the 4x4s (and fwd cars) have independent suspensions; Pajero, Land Cruiser, Jeep, MUTT and McLaren MP4-12C as well and while you can’t possibly swap the front axle with the rear one in an MP4-12C but you can in a MUTT, with some basic tools – 1500 FT. above sea level in moon light. All you need is almost 30 minutes to swap the axles and(/or) repair the bearings to make the vehicle three-wheel-drive as during off-roading, push is better than pull and therefore, when the rear-right-axle broke, we had to swap it with the front-right-one. Now I understand …

The most hardcore off-road Borneo expedition you’ll read this month
This awesome expedition report I am able to read after the Belgian couple who traversed through Congo last year. This trip, organized by Indonesian Off-road federation, this little adventure is awesome because, it is the first time after 25 years someone in vehicles has decided to try to pass through a jungle where once in in 1985, all 15 Land Rovers trying to cross it were stuck and had to be air-lifted out of the jungle. Any expedition is very simple when describe in words so was is this one. While sticking as much as close as they can to …

What happens in Jhal, does not stays in Jhal
How do I begin this, the rally bug is addictive to say the least! Desert devil and I were remembering our words after last years rally. Yaar this track is awful, real car breaker, its too cold at night, it’s too dusty, it’s too far (return journey of 26 hours driving continuously) but we have done it, so it’s like “been there, done that”. However, it was our first and last Jhal Magsi Rally participation but, the true meaning of addiction is that the moment it was announced for this year we both said, I am going definitely. As usual …
