    Exclamation Team Unimog Punga Project

We dedicate this Unimog restoration thread to Team Unimog, the courageous MEN who took this Punga.

A Brief on History of Unimogs in Pakistan: Our Military started acquisitions of Unimogs in the late 70s, although they wanted to have a RHD 4x4 go anywhere vehicle for troops (421.128 BeeMog), carry patients (421.129 DeeMog classic version), carry supplies (421.128 flat-bed), but Unimog sales teams managed to convince our generals on LHD German tractor is all we need, it started from some local demos on its capabilities, diff lock, ground clearance, articulation, approach & departure angles, torque, crawler gearbox and portal axels, since Unimogs were born with these special abilities which are still missing in most of the newly produced 4x4s so winning a sales pitch wasn’t a big issue. Mercedes exported few Unimogs to Pakistan to give an on-ground demos in Himalayas & cholistan and this was followed by a training team which delivered literally certified our drivers & mechanics on Unimogs.
Unimog 421 U600 also known as 1.25 ton truck is the most common variant our Army bought from Mercedes-Benz, in addition to that our military also had few 406, 416 and lately very few 417s. This thread though covers all types of Unimogs but 421s takes the lead due to its weight, size, quantity & availability of parts. Few key changes German engineers had to do was to comply with the 24V battery system which was our Military’s standard at that time, so first 24 Volt 421 was made for Pakistan Army and now all new Unimogs are on 24 Volt even in Germany. A minor change was done with the headlight glass lens which was fitted as per RHD traffic. All 421s purchased by Army had 4 forward gearbox along with separate lever for high and low speeds, whereas in Germany all of them were produced as 6 forward at that time (DeeMog was upgraded to 6 forward gearbox in 2011 as first 421 in Pakistan). Driver cabin Heater was also not included in the Unimog 421 package made for Pakistan. These Unimogs rolled out from the production line in only two colors which were Military Green and Desert .

(Current) Our Military made the decision that Unimogs are no longer required in Service and started the gradual auction process in 2006-07 which reached its full speed on 2011. By now it is assumed that over 96% of Unimogs 421 are gone, out of approximately 6,500 vehicles only 20-25 have reported as survived, rest of them were chopped & eaten by the local Metal masons (mog killers) who have an eye to see metal in all machines in terms of KGs, they can never see what functions a machine can deliver.

I will be covering the topics on how they performed in the Military Service later by combining the input received from X Mens. Till now we have some tremendous performances from Unimogs on all types of terrains which are tested by Team Unimog Pakistan.

Oops, if have learned so many things during modification (by reading and experimenting)
    By Reading:
    1. Do remember that Drum and Disc brake master cylinders are different, you cannot interchange as per theory (Check Summit Racing on YouTube). Cylinder Bore in very important and it depends on something called pedal ratio and there is a maths behind it. Also, large the master cylinder bore size requires more pedal power, thus driver is suppose to push very hard if your booster is idle or failed.
1" Master Cylinder is recommended for major applications.

    By Reading and Experimenting:
    2. Double Diaphragm Booster is good, but it needs lots of air pressure and it is better to install addition air reservoir or Tank. This modification requires calculation with the size of reservoir or Tank in conjunction with vacuum pump size, moreover, it requires a low and high pressure switch for safety purposes.

    3. External Vacuum pump needs oil delivery and return lines, you should identity earlier position of delivery and return lines. You can get delivery line from Oil Switch with the help of TEE (T) and connect return line (with the help of TEE) to dipstick (modification: you need alter your dipstick length as well) or oil sump or any available plug in engine block.

In view of the above, I have installed Nissan CD1700 Double Diaphragm Booster with 1" Toyota Land Cruiser Master Cylinder. For Booster installation I need to expand walls and remove 5"x2" piece underneath Master Cylinder. Luckily, alteration work and Booster is excellently aligned with pedal.

I have selected Mitsubishi 2800 CC engine vacuum pump to work with brake booster but I am unable to figure-out proper or reason place for installation.

Let see the combination works or fail. So far I have completed the project in alternator replacement cost i.e. Rs. 8,000/- (approx.)
    Wish me good luck !!!!

    Regards,

    Abdul.

    @ Rauf.
Good going, where are the pictures describing the setup. Please share.

I hope you hvnt do the chopping when it came to servo fitting. If u put in bigger dia servo then it is quite likely that Bonnet will also not sit properly. Take these suggestions in mind and keep us posted on trial n test.

    Best of luck

@Rauf.... dont tell me bro ... the set up i recon was tested (without any chopping) i know brakes are not that soft with smaller servo (they are softer) but again considering the Drum brakes locks perfectly and you hear the screatching sound when apply... what about Bonnet? is bonnet sitting perfectly?

    DeeDee,

Sure, Bonnet is sitting perfectly and I can hear braking sound as well. So, far we have successfully made bracket for vacuum pump but facing difficulty in oil lines connection in engine block. One thing I have decided that we are not going to incorporate this kind of modification in Softop and use MB vacuum pump with Electrical fuel pump like you did. (much simpler approach). I have checked (Kabari) local market MB Vacuum pump cost Rs. 3,000/- which is negotiable.

    Expenses Detail:

Rs. 2,700/- Brake Booster w/Master Cylinder (Nissan CD1700, Double Diaphragm)
    Rs. 1,000/- Vacuum Pump
Rs. 250/- Brake TEE w/Pipe to connect Front brake
    Rs. 320/- Brake Oil
    Rs. 500/- Denter
    Rs. 2,500/- Modification job
Rs. 500/- Iron plate bracket to hold vacuum pump
Rs. 600/- Oil lines for vacuum pump oil circulation (in and out)

    Total: 8,370/- (cost of hope)

I shall post pic at earliest.....

good going Rauf, waiting for final test check and tyre rubber marks on Karachi roads ... btw you are doing it very economically and thats great.

yes boy space under the bonnet of 421.128 is lot less than 129.
