Default [Update v0.2] Guides to Tuning (- the Rice)

This thread is for anyone seeking advice on RICE, may he be young, old, or unborn...
Made with the styleless in mind! Don't worry, help is here!!

CAUTION: THIS THREAD CONTAINS NO "TYPE R" STICKERS

What is "Rice"?

Despite the name, this has no relevance to the edible grain. Many examples of "rice" can be found all over this, and many other car forums. Its basically people trying to be racers. Attributes include, but are not limited to:

1.) Loud, oversized, "**** Can" exaust.
2.) Oversized spoilers/Racing spoilers on FWD cars which don't effect downforce in any known way
3.) A body kit that has gives no gain in aerodynamics, usually causing extra drag/turbulence(under the vehicle)
4.) Windows tinted in such a way that nothing is visible at night
5.) Names/Email Adresses/Phone numbers stickered to windows/other panels
6.) Stickers of autopart/racing companies that either don't exist or have no role in the car's preformance. The most typical example is the TYPE R sticker tha only applies to TYPE R Honda's.
7.) Off center vinyl/sticker stripes.
8.) Excessive Chrome

9.) Large rims

Ride owners are usually refered to as "Ricers" or "Wanna-be's"

Then you may ask:

How do I prevent my ride from becoming "Rice"?

There are a few steps to follow to ensure your saftey from being "Riced". First and foremost, do not do anything mentioned above. I also recommend the following:

1.) The easiest and BY FAR the cheapest thing you could do to your ride is wieght reduction. (Not recommended for long distance/daily used cars)

Gains: +Handling +Style (Rims) +Acceleration -Weight -Comfort

Step 1
: Remove rear seats,

spare tire and jack, radio/stereo.
Step 2: Purchase light wieght rims. A perfect balance of rubber and rim are extremely important, too much tire and they wont heat as fast, too less and they'll heat to quick causing a less comforting ride and extra wear. For most vehicles, the best sizes are between 16" and 17". (SEE SECTION 8 FOR RIM ADVICE)

Extra options:
Adv. Step .5: Remove Dashboard and interior door panels
Adv. Step 1: Replace front seats with light weight racing seats.
Adv. Step 2: Replace hood/bonnet, doors, and boot/trunk lids with carbon fiber
Adv. Step 3:

Replace rear glass with light wieght plastic inserts.
Adv. Step 4: Replace tires with wider, grippy-er treads. DO NOT USE SPACERS, THEY WILL FLY OFF!! (I say this from experience)

2.) Suspension. The suspension is the prime link between the car and the wheels, and you definitley don't want your car bouncing around at high speeds with the current state of our roads.

Gains: +Handling -Weight +Comfort +Style

Step 1:
Replace/add sway bars. By adding sway bars, you reduce body roll of your vehicle
thus keeping your wheels firmly planted through fast corners.

Step 2: Change your springs from stock to either sport shock/spring kit or "Progressive Rate lowering springs" which lower your center of gravity in turn adding style and handling without compromising the ride quality.

3.) Brakes, Corolla owners ignore this step. If you can't stop, there is no need for power. YOU NEED BRAKES BEFORE YOU UPGRADE YOUR ENGINE, ITS TRUE! Brake later and accelerate sooner. Its a racing proven formula.

Gains: +Handling +Weight/-Weight

Step 1
: If you still have stone-age drum brakes, I highly recommend upgrading to disks. If you do have disks, make sure your system is up-to-par with the speeds you will be going.

4.) Transmission. Puts the engine's power to good use. This step is primarily to ensure all of your horses will be put to use.

Gains: +Acceleration -Weight

Step 1
: Replace your clutch with a light weight performance option and replace flywheel with something more light weight.
Step 2: Poly Transmission and Engine mounts
reduce drivetrain flex exaggerated by rubber mounts. They also eliminate "chattering", missed shifts, and broken parts caused by drivetrain flex.
Step 3: Replace clutch cable with more responsive pedal feel.

Step 4: Short shifters feel alot better and give you a better feel. Mazda pulled this off beautifully with the MX-5 Miata. You can remove your knob and cut about 1.5" off the stick which will give you a better feel.
Step 5
: Update transmission fluid to a more expensive brand. You WILL feel a difference.

5.) Engine Mods (FINALLY!). You can't just be all show, you're going to need some "go". At times, an engine swap is the only real hp booster. Start off with a general engine check up.

Gains: +Acceleration +Top Speed +Weight +Style

Step 1
: Improve stock intake by replacing filters with OEM replacements from K&E.
OR

Change your set-up to a Cold-air intake. I highly recommend K&N system with a K&N air bypass valve. This valve prevents hydro-lock if your system becomes submerged in water. This step will add up to 15hp
Step 2
: A better exaust will flow better and produce a better noise. The cheapest option is to buy a hi-flow exaust muffler and and wielding on pipes to fit your ride. Or, you could opt for a full cat-back system and thermal stainless steels are a good option. Cat-backs often give ~6hp gain, which is little for the amount you're paying.
Step 3
: Update headers to polished/port matched/knife edged
Step 4
: Plugs can be switched at anytime so this step can go anywhere

Thats about 20+ hp

Adv. Step 1
: Turbo/Supercharge with EXTREME caution. This step may add as little as 20 to 100+hp. AN ENGINE SWAP MAY BE MORE SUTIBLE!!

6.) Downforce. This applies to cars that will be traveling in excess of 60mph or 96/97kmh. For FWD cars i recommend a front lip spoiler. They reduce airflow under the vehicle and re-route it to the intercooler and radiator. Front lips push the drive wheels into the ground for more grip and handling. For RWD cars, small spoilers do the trick without giving you a ricer status, as seen on BBC's Top Gear with the Konieggsegg. Spoilers do add weight, sobe cautioned when adding a very large one. FWD cars should only resort to rear spoilers if tey are traveling in excess of 80mph/120kmh or the back "slides" or "kicks out" during high speed turns.

Gains: +Handling +Style +Weight -Acceleration (due to drag)

Before buying new parts from suppliers, save a buck and check the market. For example, a 95 Civic can use brakes and updated parts from newer models. Look around the market before ordering online!

7.) Now we can move on to stylin' your ride with the following in mind: Simplicity is key. Start of by getting your stance right. Most cars go for the low stance where all all wheels are an equal distance to the body. Another stance is a Muscle type stance where the front sits .5-1" lower than the rear. To accompany this stance, rear tires and rims are slightly larger and wider.
By getting the stance first, you will be able to dertermine the question that seperates the Ricers from Men (Ricers don't have... well, you know.....STYLE): DOES MY CAR REALLY NEED A BODY KIT? If the answer is yes, follow the steps below:

Gains: +Weight +Style

If you are a true "Anti-Ricer / Tuner" then you'd go for the lightest kit available. Remeber, you don't need to go for a kit with a front bumper/side skirts/rear bumper. You can buy parts individually.

Step 1
: If you feel your car needs a little dash of something, start of with a front lip if you haven't so already. Most of the cars in PK are JDM or PKDM based off of JDM vehicles. You can either buy one that fits onto an aftermarket front bumper or one that fits onto your stock bumper.

Optional Step 1
: If your car still needs a little zest, buy an aftermarket front bumper. Since your car is already low, I've prevented you from buying big rediculous bumpers, so HA! You're stuck buying something small! HAHAHA!

This isn't a bad thing though. Observe the following vehicles:

They have one thing in common, they are tuned and have aftermarket bumpers that are small and dont scrape the ground. AND, most importantly, THEY LOOK GREAT. If you look at the second picture, most front bumpers come with either fog lamps or places to insert them. From here in te US, you can get fog lams for as little as $6, or Rs.500. They add a stunning quality to the bumper.

Step 2
: Side skirts can take your "lowered" stance to a new level. As seen in reference picture 2, a simple straight skirt can go a long and low way.
Step 3
: If that still isn't enough, go rear bumper hunting. Before, or along with, your rear bumper you may want to buy some flashy exaust tips. THAT DOES NOT MEAN THEY SHOULD BY 12INCHES IN DIAMETER AND YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO LOOK INTO THEM! Take a look at this:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HED-17165/

They have to be the most attractive tips anyone has ever concieved. And guess what ricer scum, they're only 2.5" in diameter. A WHOLE LOT smaller than the typical 6" tips on every tuner in Pakistan.

Back to the bumpers, you want something that flows with the rest of the kit but at the same time complementing your tips. Well guess what, lip lovers there are also rear lips to match the front:

Instead of a real show-shine bumper, lips pull of the task of style efforlessly. Best of all, lips are light weight compared to full bumpers.

Optional Step 3
: If you are opting for a full rear bumper consider the following: Go simple. Most body kits in Pakistan have many curves and are to complicated to please a human. I would compare the shape to Chuck Norris' leg. Believe me, that shape isn't appealing. Go for something that looks as close as stock to possible, but at the same time adds a few vents, lines, and a place that your tips will look good. Here's and example:

2nd Optional Step 3
: You can also opt for rear bumper "aprons". They're like fender flares, except for your bumper. They're little attachments that go into each corner like this:

Once they're installed, they look like this:

Whatever styling conclusion you've come to, and as long as you use this guide, I'm sure it'll be great.

8.) Next, you can choose a paint job and, if you haven't so already, rims. When buying rims, always remember: CHEAP CHROME IS FO' BALLAS'.

Becareful when choosing between more vs. less spokes. Complicated car designs are complimented by an increased amount of spokes while less complicated cars are complimented by a decreased amount of spokes
.

Chrome doesn't belong on Civics or Corollas! Here are some tips on how to choose your rims (sorted by rim color):

Gains: +Style -Weight +Chicks

Our first color is gunmetal. This can go with, really any color, but looks exceptionally well with:

Gloss(non-metalic): Red, Blue, Yellow, Black, White, Orange
Metallic: Black

Our second color is white. This is my absolute favorite type of rim, specifically because it signifies a light wieght rim. When Purchasing white rims, make sure they are not painted. They typically go well with:
Gloss: Yellow, Blue, Red, Orange (but not white)

Our next color is Silver or Brushed Metal. These go well with any car.

Our final rim color is bronze. Bronze rims are an EXCELLENT way to complete the look of a tuner. They look simply stunning with various gloss colors.

9.) Decals. (coming soon)

bang on target. Rice vs Tuner
theres a lot more n u know what i mean.

although the people wid american muscles (fords / chevys etc) call the tuners as ricer. they dont know what a tuner is.

coz what american muscles are in to is just a straight line . 10 seconds and its all over.

tuners the JDM is more than the car. its the skill of the drivers that they bring out with in.
like DRIFT the race of style and skill.
and the TOUGE is the race of skill and endurance.
etc.

let the ppl knoe wht is rice n wht is nice....i mean (JDM Tuner)

let me know if you feel something should be changed/fixed or is not releated to the PKDM market. I did this according to the US market for Japanese automobiles.
