Pak made battery-powered bikes launched

KARACHI, Oct 29 : A local firm Energen has introduced battery powered petrol-free electric scooter and motorcycle in Karachi, which is claimed to be the cheapest as well as environment-friendly consuming as low as paisa 15 to 20 per kilometre.

Addressing a press conference at Karachi Press Club Azhar Ayub said that his company after a three years hectic research had manufactured electric scooter and motorcycle, which does not require any petrol, diesel or CNG.

He explained that this was an invention of the West and popular in China but his firm has manufactured this motorcycle keeping in view the circumstances of Pakistan. He claimed that it is faster in speed than motorcycle plying in China. He said that it can carry more load and is stronger than Chinese motorcycles keeping in view of the Pakistani roads.

Azhar said that the electric scooter and motorcycle has price tags ranging from Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000, which he said is affordable by the low-income group.

He said that the electric scooter is smoke and noise free with nominal maintenance cost. He said that with these motorcycles, travelling cost would be reduced to Rs0.15 to Rs0.20 per kilometre and the electric charging cost would range from Rs500 to Rs600 per month as compared to the cost of petrol at Rs2,000 to Rs3,000 per month.

He said that its battery can cover 70 to 80 kilometre after a charging of 4 to 5 hours.

He appealed to the government and the PCSIR to help his firm in promotion of electric motorcycle in order to overcome crisis of petrol and encourage an environment friendly scooter.

just got the info.. its motor is an 800-watt motor, the motorcycle weighs between 35 to 42 kilogrammes and can carry a maximum weight of 150 to 180 kg. The cost to run it comes to 20 paisas per kilometre. The motorcycle is also kick-free and starts with self or ignition. According to the firm assembling it in Pakistan, the motorcycle is not fault-prone and only its controller can develop a fault, which can easily be repaired. After four hours of charging, the motorcycle can run up to 80 kilometres with a maximum speed of 60 kilometres per hour.

i think its fantastic...

Thank Allah, this is great news for Pakistan. The motorcycle market is no half Million a year and growing. If this motorcycle can get attention of the market with parts availability, then it can surely replace the regular motorcycle which has more complicated moving parts, that need regular maintenance. Imagine, keep kicking the petrol motorcycle when it refuses to start. Now you don't have to.

I wonder if its economically feasible to make a Hybrid Motorbike, just like hybrid car with both Petrol and Electric motor. Just like in car, the electric motor provides the initial power and then petrol engine takes over after 30+ MPH, and do not need to worry about charging the batteries as when petrol engines starts, it starts to spin the electric motor too, generates electricity and acts as battery pack charger. Electric motor is coupled with vehicle brakes so when you brake it starts spinning and slows down the Car and also charges the batteries too. If its possible for a bike, it will be great, the Petrol will still be needed, but only half the time, when the bike is traveling above let say 45+Kilometers per Hour. The only bottleneck is the cost, as bike with two engines, both electric and petrol will increase the cost, but it should not double the cost of the bike, as electric motors plus batteries are less complicated and cheaper than petrol engines. Anyhow just a thought.....

But yar how a motorbike that needs recharging by electricity save our country fuel as most of our electricity is produced by burning furnace oil, so it will be a double load on our economy, don't you guyz think so, and I don't think that it will be as cheap to run as the whole thing is pictured, electricity is way too expensive and to generate as much power from it so as to run a motorbike, it will cost a lot. Just see how much it costs to run air conditioners, if you run them regularly for the whole month, you'll get a bill of at least three to four thousand rupees.

yes.. hybrid motorcycles will indeed be very good for Pakistan.. but this total elec. scooter is as much effective.. as this is going to be laucnched initially in Karachi.. where there is so much traffic that it is impossible to drive over 60/70kmph.. the main purpose of this bike should be and i bet it is to provide economical means of transport which is the most essential need of any Karachiite.. and in particular it can be a blessing for the poorer people who can't even afford a 70cc due to feul prices...

@bilalahm
the electric motor is much more efficient than a petrol motor.. as it discipates very little heat and converts most of the electric power to mechanical.. and it does not produce any harmful emissions.. and yes the dependency of Pakistan's electricity production over petrol is a growing concern.. that is why we need to build big dams and must take steps to use coal as an energy source.. and depeding upon the power rating of the battery.. i dont think it will take too much power.. as a normal Airconditioner works on 220V at 13A of current and the battery would most probably be charged at 12V and will draw a maximum of 10A

How about CNG run motorcycle. I had heard about a Pakistani Man running his scooter on CNG, the only hurdle is placing of that Cylinder. But Pakistani mechanics are amazing, they always come up with creative solutions. Maybe you can hide it inside the Main "A" Frame of the motorbike, multiple Cylinders, hidden inside the body, Plus, the Petrol Tank can hold a small Cyclinder.

There was a talk of converting 2 stroke auto rickshaws to CNG. If same can be done with Motorbike, that will offset the higher cost of the CNG kit, after saving on less expenditure of fuel.
