Default PBC's Official Atlas Honda Factory Visit

January 22, 2013: Riders of PBC were officially invited to the Atlas Honda facility at Sheikhupura. What an experience!
PBC's Official Atlas Honda Factory Visit - IMG 2553

So here is the story. PBC contacted Atlas Honda and complained of some issues reported in the recent Euro 2 bikes. Mr. Tasneem Shuja, Head of Safety and Customer Care Dept invited us to meet him an discuss, it was then that he also invited us to visit the Honda facility and see the whole process in person, today was that lucky day for us.

The Honda factory is really a state of the art unit, I am already a big Honda fan and now after seeing this all I am even bigger fan of Honda.

The factory is spread out on an area of 27 acres, they are enhancing the production capacity gradually. During the last year alone the total sales were more than 600,000 bikes, now that is impressive. At Honda, there is no compromise on quality, we were told that without the permission of Honda Japan not even a single screw or bolt can be added or removed. At the Sheikhupura unit they are preparing all the four models CD70, Pridor, Cg125 and Deluxe whereas at Karachi unit they only produce the CD70 and Karachi unit is also much smaller, 5 acres.

When I say a state of the art unit, I really mean it. The LPDC unit (Low Pressure Diecast Unit) an the paint job unit was an example of it, the whole work was going on in a very controlled environment to avoid all kinds of hazards, etc. The paint job area was separate and to avoid any chances of dust to get there they had sealed compartments and we only saw the spray and polishing job through the glass windows.

Honda does not allow pics to be taken inside the working units, as per the policy of Honda Japan so we respected that and took pics from outside only, which I shall share here.

As far the question of 150cc bike is concerned, I asked it to Mr. Shuja. The thing is, employees at Honda will never tell you anything about their future projects and when I asked the question of 150cc bike Mr. Shuja smiled and said it will not come in the next one year However, he consoled us by telling that three to four new models are arriving within the next four year and at least one new model is arriving within a few months. Personally, I feel that the new model may well be a 150cc, but lets wait and see. He also told that Honda plans to prepare upto 250cc bikes locally, first they will bring the CBU (Completely Built Units) and then start their production locally, but this will take some time, not in near future.

Before visiting the Honda factory I was somewhat of the view that perhaps quality of Honda bikes has decreased over the year, but what we saw in the factory made us think otherwise. Everything is being done with so much precision that the chances of error are minimized to the best possible level. However, they too admit that human actions are also involved in the manufacturing process and hence the possibility of fault is always there but at the facility they try their best to ensure that every single bike is flawless.

At the facility we saw almost whole of the manufacturing process, we saw diecast unit, engine assembly unit, tank and tail plastics preparation and adding the graphics on them, paint job process, and the final assembly line. Now here is something interesting; at Honda a new bike is being produced every 26 seconds and they make a total of 1900 bikes in the whole day, once the bike is received in complete form at the final assembly line, the engineers test the torque, brakes and suspension at the computerized monitoring unit as you might have seen in some documentary movies. After this, every single bikes, yes every single bike goes out for the test ride to ensure that no weird sound is coming from anywhere and that the bike is perfect in all respects to hit the road. If any problem is found with any bike, they write it down and attach the slip with the bike for that problem to be removed, ain't that impressive?

As far as parts are concerned, most of them are being prepared locally while some parts like timing chain, carbourator, and some small sprockets etc that go somewhere in the engine are imported from Japan, there is nothing Chinese here as some people speculate. Having seen the Honda factory I am not waiting for the launch of their 150cc and I am sure it is going to be something different than what we already have on the streets. For one thing I am sure about Honda is that Honda is manufacturing the most reliable bikes not only in Pakistan but the whole world and this can be ascertained from foreign riders as well.

My personal liking for Honda above most of the other bike manufacturers is for several reasons (time to show off some knowledge now) Honda is perhaps the only true motorcycle factory. Surprised? Here is why..Suzuki was a cloth making company before they shifted to motorcycle manufacturing, Yamaha was and is still a musical instruments manufacturing factory, Kawasaki used to make huge ships and other electronic equipments, Ducati made radios at their factory and some other electrical equipments, while Honda started with motorcycles. I am sure that very few people (if any) here at PW know the full name of Mr. Honda Anyone??

Mr. Soichero Honda was a motorcycle races who loved bikes, he established his own workshop in Japan and then started with the motorcycle manufacturing. The whole Honda company is the credit of that single person. He believed in precision of work and reliability, a charactristic that Honda is following till the present day, who else is Honda fan here now?
