The first car I bought from my own money was a 1987 in black
I worked through the whole Y2K millenium holidays for it, while everyone was out partying I was making 5 times the hourly rate working straight 48 hours which one pound above minimum wage,
the car cost me 500 pounds, it had MOT for 3 months and no road tax,
being a student with virtually nothing to my name other than an old telly from a car boot sale this was my pride and joy, it was a 2.0 petrol, suede seats, factory tinted glass, power steering, electrics didnt work other than driver side, the tires needed to be inflated once every 2-3 days, central locking was moody, the clutch was so hard I needed to stand on it to change gear and the brakes pulled severely to the left so every time they were applied the steering needed to be corrected with both hands and all the strength God had put in them,
I loved that car, I used to keep sitting and looking at it, a week later a fuel hose sprung a leak, I changed it myself with a washing machine hose, then one fine day one of the wheels fell off the hub, couldnt afford a replacement hub from the scrap yard and labour was out of the question, so I had the wheel welded directly on the hub from a desi workshop which made me swear never to disclose where I had it done from coz his workshop license would get cancelled if the old bill ever found out.
I couldnt afford MOT or insurance, didnt have a driving license, but I was the proud owner of my very own ride and that was all that mattered at the time, retrospectively it was probably one the stupidest things I had ever done in my life, but at that point in time, I was king...
