Default All about Spark Plugs - Courtesy Fairsale Autos

Installing spark plugs

Torque is one of the most critical aspects of spark plug installation. Torque directly affects the spark plugs' ability to transfer heat out of the combustion chamber. A spark plug that is under-torqued will not be fully seated on the cylinder head, hence heat transfer will be slowed. This will tend to elevate combustion chamber temperatures to unsafe levels, and pre-ignition and detonation will usually follow. Serious engine damage is not far behind.
An over-torqued spark plug can suffer from severe stress to the Metal Shell which in turn can distort the spark plug's inner gas seals or even cause a hairline fracture to the spark plug's insulator...in either case, heat transfer can again be slowed and the above mentioned conditions can occur.

The spark plug holes must always be cleaned prior to installation, otherwise you may be torquing against dirt or debris and the spark plug may actually end up under-torqued, even though your torque wrench says otherwise. Of course, you should only install spark plugs in a cool engine, because metal expands when its hot and installation may prove difficult.

Gapping

Since the gap size has a direct affect on the spark plug's tip temperature and on the voltage necessary to ionize (light) the air/fuel mixture, careful attention is required. While it is a popular misconception that plugs are pre-gapped from the factory, the fact remains that the gap must be adjusted for the vehicle that the spark plug is intended for. Those with modified engines must remember that a modified engine with higher compression or forced induction will typically require a smaller gap settings (to ensure ignitability
in these denser air/fuel mixtures). As a rule, the more power you are making, the smaller the gap you will need.
A spark plug's voltage requirement is directly proportionate to the gap size. The larger the gap, the more voltage is needed to bridge the gap. Most experienced tuners know that opening gaps up to present a larger spark to the air/fuel mixture maximizes burn efficiency. It is for this reason that most racers add high power ignition systems. The added power allows them to open the gap yet still provide a strong spark.
With this mind, many think the larger the gap the better. In fact, some aftermarket ignition systems boast that their systems can tolerate gaps that are extreme. Be wary of such claims. In most cases, the largest gap you can run may still be smaller than you think.

Indexing

This is for racers only !!

Indexing refers to a process whereby auxiliary washers of varying thickness are placed under the spark plug's shoulder so that when the spark plug is tightened, the gap will point in the desired direction.

However, without running an engine on a dyno, it is impossible to gauge which type of indexing works best in your engine. While most engines like the spark plug's gap open to the intake valve, there are still other combinations that make more power with the gap pointed toward the exhaust valve.

In any case, engines with indexed spark plugs will typically make only a few more horsepower, typically less than 1% of total engine output. For a 500hp engine, you'd be lucky to get 5hp. While there are exceptions, the bottom line is that without a dyno, gauging success will be difficult.

Heat Range selection

Let's make this really simple: when you need your engine to run a little cooler, run a colder plug. When you need your engine to run a little hotter, run a hotter spark plug. However, FAIRSALE AUTOS strongly cautions people that going to a hotter spark plug can sometimes mask a serious symptom of another problem that can lead to engine damage. Be very careful with heat ranges. Seek professional guidance if you are unsure.

With modified engines (those engines that have increased their compression) more heat is a by-product of the added power that normally comes with increased compression. In short, select one heat range colder for every 75-100 hp you add, or when you significantly raise compression. Also remember to retard the timing a little and to increase fuel enrichment and octane. These tips are critical when adding forced induction (turbos, superchargers or nitrous kits), and failure to address ALL of these areas will virtually guarantee engine damage.

An engine that has poor oil control can sometimes mask the symptom temporarily by running a slightly hotter spark plug. While this is a "Band-Aid" approach, it is one of the only examples of when and why one would select
a hotter spark plug.

Using "racing" spark plugs

Be cautious! In reality, most "racing" spark plugs are just colder heat ranges of the street versions of the spark plug. They don't provide any more voltage to the spark plug tip! Their internal construction is no different than most standard spark plugs.

There are some exceptions, though. Extremely high compression cars or those running exotic fuels will have different spark plug requirements and hence FAIRSALE AUTOS deals in spark plugs that are well-suited for these requirements. They are classified as "specialized spark plugs for racing applications". Some are built with precious metal alloy tips for greater durability and the ability to fire in denser or leaner air/fuel mixtures.

However, installing the same spark plugs Kenny Bernstein uses in his 300+ mph Top Fuel car (running Nitromethane at a 2:1 air/fuel ratio and over 20:1 dynamic compression) in your basically stock Honda Civic (running 15:1 a/f ratios with roughly 9.5:1 compression) will do nothing for you! In fact, since Kenny's plugs are fully 4 heat ranges colder, they'd foul out in your Honda in just a few minutes.

FAIRSALE AUTOS as a fair and ethical parts supplier tries to stay clear of saying that a racing spark plug (or ANY spark plug) will give you large gains in horsepower. While certain spark plugs are better suited to certain applications (and we're happy to counsel you in the right direction) we try to tell people that are looking to "screw in" some cheap horsepower that, in most cases, spark plugs are not the answer.

To be blunt, when experienced tuners build race motors, they select their spark plugs for different reasons: to remove heat more efficiently, provide sufficient spark to completely light all the air/fuel mixture, to survive the added stresses placed upon a high performance engine's spark plugs, and to achieve optimum piston-to-plug clearance.

Some of these "specialized racing plugs" are made with precious metal alloy center/ground electrodes or fine wire tips or retracted-nose insulators. Again, these features do not necessarily mean that the spark plug will allow the engine to make more power, but these features are what allow the spark plug to survive in these tortuous conditions. Most racers know screwing in a new set of spark plugs will not magically "unlock" hidden horsepower.

Using high power ignition systems

Many of the more popular aftermarket ignition systems are of the capacitive discharge type. They store voltage, or accumulate it, until a point at which a trigger signal allows release of this more powerful spark. Companies like Mallory, MSD, Crane and Accel, to name a few, offer such systems.

They affect spark plugs in that they allow the gaps to be opened up to take advantage of the increased capacity. The theory is that the larger and the more intense the spark you are able to present to the air/fuel mixture, the more likely you will be to burn more fuel, and hence the more power you will make.

We encourage the use of such systems, but only on modified or older non-computer controlled vehicles.
In reality, computer controlled vehicles do such a good job of lighting off the air/fuel mixture (as evidenced by the ultra-low emissions), added ignition capacity would do little to burn more fuel since the stock configuration is doing such a good job. Older non-computer controlled vehicles or those that have been modified with higher compression or boosted (nitrous, turbo, supercharged) engines can certainly take advantage of a more powerful ignition system.

V-Power™

Advanced V-groove center electrode provides optimum performance and fuel efficiency required by today's lean-burning engines.

- OEM-Approved Design

- V-Groove Design Enhances Ignitability

- More Complete Combustion and Lower Emissions

- Racer's Choice for Performance

Modern lean-burning, fuel efficient engines create a new set of requirements for spark plugs. NGK Spark Plugs answered the call for a spark plug with lower sparking voltage requirements by developing the V-Power, the only spark plug with a v-groove center electrode on the market today.

Why is this important? The v-groove center electrode on a V-Power spark plug forces the spark to the outer edge of the ground electrode, placing it closer to the air/fuel mixture. What this does is allow the spark to more quickly ignite the mixture, providing more complete combustion.

More complete combustion not only provides more power, it also means less harmful emissions. These emissions are not only damaging to the environment, they can reduce the life of expensive catalytic converters and oxygen sensors. V-Power Spark Plugs also require lower ignition firing voltage, resulting in quicker starts and easier cold weather starts throughout the life of the plugs.

NGK V-Power Spark Plugs also are ideally suited for race cars and high performance street cars. Today's performance engines are high compression/high stress applications. Many are supercharged, turbo-charged or nitrous oxide fed.

NGK's patented v-groove design allows the ignition system to easily spark in these dense air/fuel mixtures. The flame kernel will quickly grow and allow the engine to potentially make more power since it now is operating more efficiently.

As an added bonus, the v-groove forcing the spark to the outer edge of the ground electrode helps reduce the "quenching" effect, reducing misfires caused by high cylinder pressures "blowing out" the spark.

NGK V-Power spark plugs are available for most Pakistani and Import cars and light trucks.

Spark Plugs: What's Next After Platinum?, Larry Carley, Counterman
Platinum is a buzzword today for durability - and for good reason. Platinum is one of the best conductors of heat and electricity. It also resists chemical corrosion and electrical erosion much better than steel alloys, making it an ideal material for the spark plug electrode(s). Some plugs have a solid platinum center electrode while others have a small button of platinum welded onto the tip of the center electrode or both electrodes (single platinum vs. double platinum).

The main reason for using platinum electrodes is to minimize electrode wear. Every time a plug fires, a tiny amount of metal is vaporized and lost from the surface of both electrodes. The center electrode typically suffers the most wear because it runs hotter than the side electrode.

As the electrodes wear, the air gap across which the spark must jump becomes wider and wider. The gap on a standard spark plug grows about 0.00063m. to 0.000126 in. for every 1,000 miles of normal driving. And the wider the gap, the greater the voltage needed to jump the gap. On standard plugs, the firing voltage requirements creep up about 500 volts for every 10,000 to 15,000 miles of driving. Eventually, the plug may need more volts to fire than the coil can produce, causing the plug to misfire.

Using platinum almost eliminates electrode wear. Platinum is expensive, but it can double or even triple a spark plug's normal service life - from 30,000 to 45,000 miles for a standard plug up to 60,000 to 100,000 miles or more with platinum. Most aftermarket plug suppliers do not make specific mileage claims for their platinum plugs, but say to follow the OEM replacement intervals - which in most cases is 100,000 miles for platinum plugs.

Though long-life platinum plugs cost more than standard spark plugs, the OEMs are using them for several reasons. One is that they reduce the risk of misfire, which is essential to meet OBD II requirements. Another is that they help prolong the life of the catalytic converter (also by reducing misfires). Third, they almost eliminate the need for periodic maintenance. On many engines today, replacing the spark plugs can be a difficult and time-consuming job - particularly the back bank of plugs on transverse-mounted V6 engines in front-wheel drive cars and minivans.

One important point to keep in mind about platinum plugs is that they're not all the same. Some are more durable than others, and some provide better fouling resistance and ignition performance than others. It all depends on the design of the plug, the type of alloys used for both the center and side electrode(s), the configuration of the electrodes and the engine application.

BEYOND PLATINUM

A variety of exotic alloys are used in electrodes to improve durability and performance. Bosch, for example, uses a nickel-yttrium alloy for the side electrodes in its "Platinum Plus 4" spark plugs. In Europe, Bosch has recently introduced a new plug that uses yttrium for both the center and ground electrodes. For years, Champion manufactured a premium plug with a gold-palladium center electrode and copper filled side electrode. Champion has discontinued their gold plug and is now offering a premium "Platinum Power" plug with a platinum tipped center electrode. Autolite uses a chromium-nickel alloy for the ground electrode with its platinum tipped center electrode plug, while ACDelco uses a silver-nickel alloy side electrode with its platinum tipped plugs.

Denso and NGK have both introduced new premium plugs with iridium alloy electrodes. NGK says iridium is even better than platinum in terms of corrosion, and resistance and ignition performance.

ELECTRODE MAGIC

Many spark plugs today have unique electrode designs such as V-split, grooved or clipped ground electrodes, multiple ground electrodes, fluted center electrodes, V-notched center electrodes, etc. Though each plug manufacturer takes a slightly different approach and claims various benefits for their design, the basic idea is to make it as easy as possible for the spark to jump the gap and ignite the fuel mixture. A spark jumps more easily between small, sharp surfaces than large dull ones - which is another reason why new plugs require less firing voltage than old ones with worn, dull electrodes.

Another issue that plug manufacturers talk about is "unshrouding" the spark so it has a better opportunity to ignite the fuel mixture. Opening up the spark also means the flame kernel it creates can expand more rapidly and evenly inside the combustion chamber, reducing the chance of the flame kernel being quenched and a misfire occurring. Split-Fire's V-shaped ground electrode as well as Bosch's surface gap four electrode Platinum Plus 4 are both designs that claim to expose more of the spark to the fuel mixture.

One thing to keep in mind about all "performance" spark plug designs is that no plug can magically create horsepower out of thin air or add horsepower that wasn't there in the first place. But improved ignition reliability can minimize horsepower losses caused by misfires. That's why some plug manufacturers claim their spark plugs improve power. The gains come from power that was being lost to misfires.

PLUG WIRES

Good plug wires are just as important to ignition performance as the spark plugs. The wires carry high voltage from the ignition coil to the spark plugs. Each wire has a conductive core surrounded by a layer of insulation. The insulation may be surrounded by additional reinforcement such as braided fiberglass and a protective outer covering or jacket. At both ends of the wire are terminals which connect to the spark plug and distributor cap (or coil pack in distributorless ignition systems). Each end also has a boot to keep out moisture and dirt. Spark plug boots are usually molded silicone rubber, but on many import applications are phenolic or metal tubes.

The type of insulation used in a plug wire is also important. Premium wire sets typically use silicone or EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) insulation which offers higher temperature resistance than Hypalon or other materials. Some premium wire sets also have a protective outer covering of EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate). EVA provides thermal protection to over 400 degrees and has a tensile strength 200 percent higher than silicone.

Hello!
@ahsontariq....
i am a customer of MR Tariq Mohsin...have buy plug and wires from him...!
well about torque spec....you are right.....but how can we get the best of it when tightening.....
is there any device available here in Khi to tighten it A/c to given torque value??
well i am currently using Lucas® 4 tips plugs which Mr Tariq Suggest me to use....well as unfortunately one plug broke inside head....and fortunately...i succeed taking it out without opening head......as this time...tightened it with light hand...but now i am felling that car is taking long time to start and somehow missing sometimes or misfire....! so i think that can be due to incorrect tightening torque...well suggest one if there any such thing available....!
Regards..
Thanxx

Thankyou for relying on Fairsale Autos.

I talked to Tariq Mohsin (who happens to be my dad and he has asked me to inform you to use a normal plug spanner (Plug paana) for tightening the plug and make sure that it is neither tightened loosely nor too tightly. Just a gentle nudge in the end for tightening purposes would be more than enough.

He also says that the best way to learn how to tighten the plugs to ensure optimum torque is to visit a decent mechanic / workshop once and note how they do it and inquire, if necessary. Observe, learn and remember in future to do the same yourself.

Hope I've answered your question.

Hello!
for me...spending so much on Platinum plugs is useless on normal performing engines......!it won't be needed until or unlees u have some Rich Mixture setup to burn inside engine as its mostly in Extreme performing engines....there...Platinum power is needed .....
in normal performing engines.......4 tip plugs are enough....!

Platinum plugs won't do you much good unless you have modified your engine. I would suggest Lucas four point plugs and American Silicon plug wires (highly effective yet economical) for your vehicle. Contact Mr. Tariq Mohsin in this regard.

For your vehicle, Lucas four point plugs would be more appropriate instead of these iridium plugs because they are afterall single point plugs. As for plug wires, the splitfire ones are the best and stick with them.

For further details, contact Mr. Tariq Mohsin.

I would like to emphasize a couple of things here:
1. So many young enthusiasts are wasting their precious money on Iridum / Platinum Plugs and Splitfire Plugs and plugwires, when in fact these would not increase the performance of their 'normal' and 'unmodified' vehicles in any manner whatsoever. The reason why I posted some basic information about spark plugs at the beginning of this post was infact meant to educate everyone about the reality and upto what extent do these spark plugs increase the performance of your vehicle. The source of this information was NGK's own official website.

Whenever a customer, especially young dare devils come to us for buying spark plugs, we always ask them the details of their vehicle and if we feel that the customer is making a mistake and wasting his money, we always advise him not to do so even if it is to our own disadvantage and loss.

Like the brother above, who installed iridum plugs in his Honda Civic 95, but could not enjoy the value for his precious money spent. Whereas, he could have had a much better return, had he installed simple four point plugs (preferably lucas). Always ask a person who 'knows' the technicalities of spark plugs and only then go and spend your (or your parent's) hard earned money.

2. For plug wires, we see that people are wasting thousands of rupees to buy Splitfire and other plug wires for unmodified and stock vehicles. Total wastage. Go for silicon plug wire (preferably American) altered by the seller for your vehicles wire size requirements. A typical American Silicon Plug Wire set with American boots and American terminals costs between Rs. 500 to Rs. 700 and lasts four to five times longer than other Japanese normal wires.

I am going to reproduce extracts below about plug wires which I took from NGK's official website:

divwidth: 100%; background-color: #99ffcc""PLUG WIRES

The type of insulation used in a plug wire is also important. spancolor: #990000""Premium wire sets typically use silicone or EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) insulation which offers higher temperature resistance than Hypalon or other materials
.
Some premium wire sets also have a protective outer covering of EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate). EVA provides thermal protection to over 400 degrees and has a tensile strength 200 percent higher than silicone.

So, unless you have modified your engine.... (and by modifying, I mean the complete works) do not waste your money on unnecessary performance products.

Hope this helps.

Salam
Nice info, A couple of questions

#)so, 4 tip are the best for CNG ? #)suitable plugs with suitable wires are enough ? or there is more to it , like the ign coil mentioned ? (excluding MSD etc)
#)Any shop in mind here in rwp / isb ?
#)what is the price range for lucas 4tip.
#) Is MSD any good for non-efi car ? or its efficiency is restricted to modified engines.

Kindly answer these , i have a non efi car and looking for optimizing combustion.

Thanks
