    Default Remembering Charade G10 (1978-1982)

Not too sure how many of you owned it.. how many still have it. But its special for me as it was my dream car when i was a child and not only this but it happens to be the very first car which i bought from my hard earned money.. I remember when i was about 5 years old, our neighbors bought a yellow colored 2 door one (also known as runabout) & I use to admire it a lot. I also have an original brochure of this car with me even today & I was so fond of this car that it use to be pasted on my bedroom wall too .. This thread is all about the great little Charade G10.. Lets share everything about it here.

    Charade G10 (1978-1982)
    Engine: CB20 Inline 3 Cylinder
    Displacement: 993cc
    Output: 50bhp (37KW)
    Torque: 74 Nm
    Compreesion Ratio: 9,0:1
    Body: 3 door & 5 door hatchback
Transmission: 5 speed Manual & 2 speed Daimatic (Automatic)
    Overall Length: 3510mm
    Overall Width: 1510mm
    Overall Height: 1360mm
    Wheelbase: 2300mm
approximately 90,000 charades were built during 1978-1982.. the pre-facelift (1978-80) had round headlights while it was face lifted in 1980 with some interior improvements & changed square head lights & redesigned tail lights. I will try to update this thread & keep it as informative as possible, do share if you have something about this car..

    @rainer
the price of a good G10 charade these days is around Rs. 100,000/- while there was one on sale for just Rs. 50,000/- few days back (pic attached below).. keep in mind that a new 1000cc car in our market costs above Rs. 750,000/- which fail to offer the features which Charade G10 use to have.. still i believe there are thousands of G10 charades in Pakistan..

this went for just 50,000 few weeks back

Do you mean the noise/reson for this "sound" ?

Yes, I found it, it was my mistake. There where 2 problems come together, one small and a big one.

At frist I don't have check that the connecting rod bearing was rotating too hard on Cylinder nr. 1 so the connecting rod bearing rotate after a while together with the crankshaft.

And the smaller problem was that I had used too much additional sealing compound between the oil sump and its seal, so the sealing compound goes into the oil sump and if goes there to the oil pump where it closed the filter.

After that I have replaced the crankshaft by one from a CB23 engine from a G100 Charade. This crankshaft was complete the same for the timing of fireing, but the diameter was bigger at the side where the oil pump is. So I increase the diameter of the oil pump cover to the size of what a CB23 engines hole has. (I could not use the cover from the CB23 engine so the engine's block is there different, the CB23 oil pump cover will NOT fit on a CB20 engine (does not cover the complete room from the oil pump), after that I only have to use a new seal ring (typ CB23) and all fit.

Please also note that the flywheel from the CB20 engine will not fit correct on the CB23 engine/crankshaft so it have also a bit less diameter so the flywheel will give you some "tick" noises after mounting, but you did not see it on the first moment, you only reconice a silent periodically "tick-tick-tick" noise. The flywheel from a CB20 (G10 Charade) is full metal, the CB23 flywheel is perforated (4 eliptical holes).

I will attach a few pics from the repair

Actually i got G11 and the noisy engine is one of the biggest problem i face and the noise of piston wrist pins are just too bad.

Last time i changed the pins but becuase pistons were old the noise was back in one or two days the mechanic says its a common prob of charade engine.

Also its impossible to find such good parts in pakistan anymore all you get cheap chinese or korean parts.

    Can you describe the noisy?

A CB2x engine should be sound like that

But please note that a different carburator setup can change the noise of the engine a bit.

Does the car needs oil refill? If yes in which distances? (every 1000km for example?)

Do you have the possibility to make such a movie and put it online on youtube that I also can hear it?

Thats the pistons from my G10, I did NOT change there anything, at this moment the engine runs for about 130,000 km only.

My father bought a G10 back in 1986 and we still have it in the family. The odometer was around 60k km when he got it and now it's around 160k km. With the passage of time we bought/sold other cars but the G-10 is a stayer at house. The car mostly rests now and I start it once a month take it out for a little drive and the total driving in 2008 was around 500 km only.

The noise of the engine, specially that noise if accellerating what you can see on my move up there, THIS noisy comes from the setup of the carburator. If it is correct adjusted (the carburator) it sounds like this, if you change the air/fuel ratio, the noisy will also changed...

Check it out, we had discuss it at our forum. Here is the link to this thread
