As much as I wait for sundays to arrive so that I could get few Patina related chores done, the day mostly goes by without any productivity for a reason or another.

There were few chores that needed to be done today but unfortunately I slept most of the day off and when I woke up there was a small span in which I only could go help the guy who is fabricating towel rails for Patina's bumpers as he was having problems figuring out the true shape of the front towel rail. He'll yield the towel rails tomorrow eve.

Then whatever small time I was left with, I went to an army store and collected a fender flag post to be used as fender marker on the passenger side of Patina's front fender. Here is how it looks:

    o!o 1965 Volkswagen Type-1 Beetle DIY Project -448764o!o 1965 Volkswagen Type-1 Beetle DIY Project -448765

The mounting bracket that came with the flag post needs a little modification to mount the inverted lip of the fender before it could be all mounted and serve the purpose it was bought for...as you can see in the second picture.

Default Local Fabrication of Towel Rails for Patina's American Spec Bumpers

Ok the wait is over. Towel Rails are molded and shaped and have just been collected from Ustaad Iqbal aka Baali. Even though I bought the best quality steel pipe to match the chromium glow of the original German towel rails but the comparison of the two shames today's steel glow.

Other than the fact that there are stretch marks that are rather killing the overall comparison of the two, things are pretty hearty. But then I guess thats the best that could be done locally.

Even though the rails are not ready yet to be mounted to blades since the ends need to be trimmed and fitted with screw holes for mounting the rails on the blades but still I thought sharing pictures of the result of the local fabrication so far would give you guys an idea of what is exactly happening. Pictures; Just note the difference of the shine, the OG towel rails and the fabricated, which need not be told which one is which

Caution: Pictures are low quality (will try and get you better pictures at day time sometime soon)

The gaps you see in the last picture of comparison of the front bumper towel rail are due to the fact that the original towel rail is out of shape as its beaten as it was struck when Patina was in the possession of PO.

About the marred chrome finish on the newly fabricated rails, it would be uplited once it gets buffed, though it would never be as shiny as the original ones but I am still hopeful that the uplift would be considerable after some hardwork on buffing and polishing.

So what do you guys think of the job?

They look pretty good for a replica, what gauge did you use?

If they can make towel rails then I think the pea shooter exhaust pipes won't be a problem for them to make either.

Used 16 Gauge instead of the stock 18 Gauge.

Yeah Exhaust, be it stinger or another shape, is no biggy with the kind of stuff this guy does, with the kind of setup he has, although he surely needs a sample to work with.

Time has arrived when all the replications, even the smallest ones are up on the task list. Its time to produce stuff locally that has either been missing on Patina or has been replaced with the cheap aftermarket stuff.

Many such replications are in the assembly line. Yesterday I went out to get the throttle return spring fabricated to restore the stock throttle setup on Patina's 28PICT. It was a matter of 5 mins before the spring was fabricated as cheaply as for Rs. 50 as I carried the throttle cable guide tube with me for the inside diameter.

I ended up getting it made a bit lengthier than the stock length as had no measurements on it. But since now its been fitted and the length ascertained, I will be getting another made today to the proper length. I would've cut it to length but then cutting up springs isn't advised since it disturbs the overall tension gradient on the springs resulting in short life.

    Pictures:
    o!o 1965 Volkswagen Type-1 Beetle DIY Project -453737o!o 1965 Volkswagen Type-1 Beetle DIY Project -453738o!o 1965 Volkswagen Type-1 Beetle DIY Project -453739o!o 1965 Volkswagen Type-1 Beetle DIY Project -453744

The spring was purposefully test fitted to see if the throttle shaft needed bushing with this restoration of the setup because installation of throttle return spring pushes the throttle shaft rearwards and I almost was certain that it might leak a bit and my guess was right. Though the leakage is minimal and doesn't really look too alarming but to avoid and 'fire hazard' will get the spring in the correct measurement fabricated and will install to check back again if the leakage is still there since with the larger spring the tension gradient is large too. If it would still be leaking, will get the throttle shaft rebushed.

Once the spring is done, next up would be the spring sleeve & the lock seat.

Default Throttle Return Spring Setup on 28PICT Carb

Though this would bring a bitter effect to the mouth taste of those who dont like "reference" details on a DIY thread but I believe this illustration qualifies for a place on the thread to elaborate the throttle return setup I am trying to restore.

Thanks for the share. I was always confused regarding the throttle cable spring on a 28pict. All others have vertically installed springs right?

Correct. All except 28PICT, 28PICT/1 & 28PICT/2 have vertically oriented throttle return springs.

Too long since I have had anything done with, except getting the correct length Throttle Return Spring fabricated which I only fitted earlier this morning before I cleaned Patina all up and took her for a drive.

The correct Length of the Throttle Return Spring is 4 inches, had to learn it the hard way, i.e. by getting a couple made to fit correctly with the margin of sleeve/collar. The carb migh need rebushing at some point in time in future as the throttle shaft leaks just a touch but I am not ready to take any chances with this one as it could result in a fire hazard.

Hopefully by next week, I could get back in routine of getting things back on road as far as the DIY is concerned.
