hey fellas , i have a 2001 cultus with mashallah perfect engine and perfect gear shifting , the only problem , i am facing is a strange khar khar noise on cold start up for few minutes on idle , like theres some bearing is loose somewhere, after gear oil spread or if i press clutch , the noise goes away , sound is like something is loose in gear and it surprisingly dissapear if i press clutch , i recently change my gear oil and i use shell red gear oil api gl4 sae 100 and used 2.50 litres of gear oil , after gear oil change i find my gear shifting more improve and soft , but unfortunately the sound is still there , i observe sound heard a little less than it was before but its still there , mechanic suggest to put half litre of stp in it and he said it will make sounds vanished but i am not sure to take a risk , also 2 and half litres are strict majors or we can add half litre more into it as my mechanic suggested to put stp , thanks in advance to read it .Regards Syed
Stp.. I don't think that is the right way to go about this.
Btw- you have the viscosity of gear oil wrong.Zic gear ff is best for this car.

thanks omarabdullah for replying , and u were right some how about zic is best for cultus , but its prolly best for new cars but mine is 2001 model and my mechanic suggest to pour shell as its viscosity is a bit more zic is 85w and shell is 100w hence i pour shell .cheers for your reply though , i would like to know the solution though if theres any .
Welcome
You shouldn't change viscosity only because the car is old. Using thick engine oil in this car will destroy the hydraulic lifters.
Check the clutch bearing and seek help from @xulfiqar.
Same Problem with me 2004 carbi cultus, used ZIC Gear Oil, sound vanished.. previously used PSO gear oil. i think zic is PATLA OIL due to which lubrication improved......
thanks sajjad for sharing your experience !!
verify oil level again in gearbox. You are hearing countershaft end play noise. You also need to make sure the gear oil you are using is made for synchronized manual transmissions, there are a ton of gear oils very cheap in Pakistan which are not meant for synchronized gearbox like yours.
Same problem in My Alto 2003 As well
i recomend you to top it up with pak suzuki gear oil ,,,,,,,Gl4 ,,,,,,,,its easily available at suzuki 3S ,,,,,,i am using it in my cultus 07 ,,,,
Sir! How is your cultus running? I was going through your thread a few months ago and I must say- I'm impressed.
i went to mechanic again today and this time he done something different he took out the gear oil out and pour it back this time from the top not from the bottom , he have his logic which i am not able to understand but he was sure that gear oil level is full now for gear oil i already make sure that shell red gear oil viscosity 95w100 is fine for synchronized gearbox , they recommend 2 gear oil for synchronized gear boxes , zic viscosity 85w90 and shell 95w100 as mine is not new and gear oil changed few times so they pour shell one in my gear box , now if its countershaft end play noise , i dont think it will go away , the last suggestion hes giving me to pour half litre of stp on the top , i would like u to confirm is that a wise move or should i just leave that the way it is , 2 minutes voice wont make much of difference i guess !!
I kept cultus and margalla for almost 12 years. both have same transmission (Suzuki 5 speed FF). I doubt troubleshooting of u and ur mechanic. This "Khar khar" noise is only because of following two reasons.1. THIRST BEARING : this is a large bearing present in between gear and clutch plate. this is mainly and most likely the culprit. it costs 1200 rupees and 2000 to 3000 labor and 4 hours. 2. FIFTH GEAR : the fifth gear in gear box is present in a separate small compartment, a small tube takes gear oil from main gear compartment to the fifth gear compartment. if u use too viscous and dirty gear oil, this tube get clogged and gear oil don't get to the fifth gear properly or slowly, dry fifth gear will produce khar khar sound but it vanishes as soon as enough gear oil is transferred to fifth gear compartment. the solution for this problem is very complicated, first of all use less viscous gear oil, if the problem persists, u have to open up the gear box and clean that tube and u may have to change the fifth gear.
BUT the chances of fifth gear problem is only 5%, 95% culprit is thirst bearing. good luck.
thanks for the details reply , i really appreciate that , mechanic reckon its not thurst bearing for sure otherwise it would come a lot more not for few minutes on start up , yes he mention your second part aswell , and hes sure thats 5th gear problem , i have already change my gear oil to less viscosity one , but sound is there yes its a lot less as it was before but sound is there so my question is this time my mechanic said if he top up half litre more of gear oil or stp that will vanished the sound , but i am not sure to put extra half litre when gear oil of cultus is meant to be 2 and half litre which is probably full at the moment , i hope u will guide me on that aswell .
Never over fill the gear oil,it will produce excessive pressure, results in damage of oil seals and hard gear shifting.Don't worry about this noise because its generic problem in Cultus / Baleno / Margalla / Khyber due to lack of lubrication in fifth gear circuit specially in cold weather and some times at morning start up.
thanks for your valuable suggestion , guess its sorted i wont worry much about it .
Hello all respected PWs: i have cultus 07 carby. i was driving on motorway in 5th gear and suddenly that khaar khaar noise starts. i have red complete thread and unable to understand that by changing the viscosity how that sound will get vanished. i am little bit agreed that its due to thirst bearing. although all 5 gears move swiftly but when i loose clutch at 5th gear that sound starts.
Please guide!
its more related to gear itself than the oil imo.Get it checked by gear wala and pour 2.5l new oil. use gear FF 75w85 only (Recommended suzuki viscosity)
I recently got my gear seals fixed (replace them when you open. no more hesitation)and poured 75w85. its much smoother as it can go
Please treat your openion the way Abbas told you
place is busy. sending it to your way
Place is busy big thing in there hmm
