speaking of used cars repairs.
Heres one,
customer rolls in a honda civic (electric shift) - aka prosmatik - the transmission is slipping like crazy - I check the ATF and it literally smells like burnt oil
Before I do anything further I notice some orange RTV on the casing joints and the gearcase is generally cleaner than the engine (ver recent overhaul) - after having some tea n biscuits with the owner (btw biscuits were not the expensive dibba - think cottage industry bakery biscuits)
we get to the repair quotation - he literally fell out of his chair. He said that he can get a used transmission extremely cheaper - I agreed please go ahead - he leaves. Got a call again that even the used trans did not work. So in comes the car. I gave him his "newly installed trnasmission" back and repaired the old one.
The problems
Torque converter is blue from overheating (bad - need a new one)
The mechanic who repaired it previously used "preburnt" clutch plates lol
The pressure regulator valve body main valve is fully bottomed out (this valve fills the torque converter and also supplies oil to the gearbox)
Trans filter was eliminated by mechanic.
A new soft kit with filter and rebuilt TC was used (sourced from S'pore) - I bought them in advance.
Reason of failure.
Mehcanic overtightened the pressure regulator valve body and warped it causing the main pressure valve to get stuck
Elimination of filter is disaster in any automatic.
Precis
Dont muck around with precision parts unless you have the service manual.
New parts and a junkyard transmission is not the same.
