The car is a 1978 1600 VW type 182 (RHD), it was a treat for myself after i recieved some great news today. mashAllah it's a wonderful car and all parts are complete. bought it from here, it was advertised in august 2006 and even back then i wanted it pretty badly,but had my hands full with my 1303 project. All the older members may recall aridsoul wanted this car but the deal never happened, i'm sure he's happy that it went to a VW enthusiast and a friend. It needed to be rescued before it was sold to someone who didn't know its true value.

As with my 1303 this is not to be "Pimped", the emphasis will be on modern engineering and true restoration, i'm not a huge fan of silly alterations

i WISH i could say that driving the "thing" is a pleasure, but i have yet to do the alighnment of it so at the moment the front left tyre is off by almost 20 degrees. will be working on the car during hte eid break. last night i applied the rear sticker/number plate and refit the soft top. let's see what all i cross off the check lust today... (will post the list of immediate problems/ issues next)

just from the drive home i found that i must address the following issues:

Alignment (front wheel is off by about 20 degrees)
replace gearshift rod (current one is broken)
new engine rubber (currently has beetle one but needs bus one)
Pedal rubbers (currently metal only)
Brake adjustment (not checked yet)
Exhaust system (current setup is venting under car rather that through the bumper)
Headlight (only have one)
Tail lights (don't have any)
Front indicators (don't have any)
Drivers seat swap/repair (broken hinge)
Sun visors (driver side is loose)
Door removal clips/stays (need new ones)
Floor boards (this car will NOT have carpeting)
Tyres (will be swapping the tyres off from the 1303)
Glovebox lid (left it at the mechanics)
Steering wheel (have to remove the tiny wooden one and replace it with a VW unit)
Steering column (has a corolla one, need a VW unit)
New roof (current soft top has shrunk!!!)
Replace beading under windscreen (worn out)
roof frame clips (front locks are worn out)

there is ALOT more stuff which will need to be done before i take her out of the house again, but don't expect miracles till i make another trip to europe as most parts for this car are not available in PK.

that is my dads 123, we bought it brand new in the UK back in 81 and brought it back to PK when we moved here. i've got it now and it just got fully rebuilt (denting) from shahnawaz. more details on it later.

the list is VERY long (see above) and every day i find more to do on it. as for the "theme" i'm trying to make it look something like the vehicles used by General Erwin Rommel (AKA the desert fox) in north africa.

The resto has gone a long way..... I know it may have tested your patience on several occassions but inshallah you will cherish the final product. Keep up the good work buddy!

thanks razak, was waiting to hear from you here. already she was great fun driving back from the workshop. right now she's sleeping while i source parts for her.

Hi Sameer, your best bet for used but original parts would be Jakarta if you happen to know some one there, the beetle is known as "Kodok" there and the Thing is a poor man's mercedez. Have seen many on the streets, parts easily available and a head turner would only cost you around $ 600 - 1000. Karman Gia from the 70's was around US $ 2000 to 3000 albeit limited number. Search the web for VW Club of Bandung and VW Club of Jakarta and source parts from there. Guaranteed great deals. I have friends there but they are more into booz and women then classics

car is sitting in the back of my driveway, 2 flat tyres, no lights and alighnment is WAY off,.. need time and money to fix it all. compiling a list of parts i need to order from the UK to get it roadworthy.
