Japanese Domestic Toyotas had this emission control system in 1975 and later models.
The 86 Corolla which was Japan's export model didn't have any such system whereas their domestic models were equipped with, what you may have heard, TTC engines.
TTC stands for Toyota Total Clean. Its an emissions control system which employs various ways to cut down emissions and imorove efficiency.
Although some TTC systems used a catalytic converter, i am not too sure if one was used in the 86. So chances are, your car doesn't have one.
