Pisa is a small town about an hour train ride from Florence. One my second day I decided to go there since I was pretty much done with Florence and there was heavy rain as well.
I went to train station and bought tickets to Pisa <--> Florence. One way cost is 8 euros and they are not train specific, i.e. can be utilized on any train between the two cities. During journey tickets are checked so make sure you buy and validate one before you board the train. You'll be fined if you have an unvalidated ticket. The regional trains are nice, clean and have bucket type seats.
Anyhow Pisa is really small town, and the famous leaning tower is about 15 minutes walk from the train station. Rain was there as well so I waited for about 30 minutes at the station, later weather turned just about fine (not sunny) to go to the leaning tower and see the town. All in all you'll probably not spend more than 3 hours there, so if you plan to go to Florence then Pisa is a nice place for a half day trip.
