the 1KZ-TE pump only needs to be installed and matched to the timing mark, the actual timing is set by the ECU, the big PWM solenoid you see on it is the fuel input solenoid.
The other connectors on the pump are the crank position sensor, fuel temperature sensor, fuel pump pressure sensor. The most common failure that is seen is a bad timing belt that causes sloppy pump operation. But if your boost sensor cannot register correct pressure it will cause the engine to either run very weak with absolutely no smoke or run hot and spew black smoke.
Can you take it to a workshop that can connect a scan unit for you. Most probably you need to get it read from the diag port in the engine bay.
