ASA Brother, I'm guessing this response is too late to help you, but hopefully will help future readers
Good that you're getting everything done, and getting the engine bay cleaned up as well. I would strongly advise to stay away from the service stations and their dirty rags. Your paint will thank you for it! Same goes with the engine bay. Avoid the whole 'kerosene/diesel' debate and welcome to the world of detailing technology. Engine degreasers work wonders. They will cut your job and effort into even less than half and you will have a world of fun watching all the grime melt away in front of your eyes.
Make sure you dilute as per instructions labeled. Be liberal with the product and cut down on your own work time. I would also strongly suggest to give it a bit of a wipe down after letting it soak for a little while. You will need some proper soft bristled brushes to get into nooks and crannies and not damage anything, but it is really worth the effort.
Once you are done with the cleaning remember it needs to look good as well. Get a water based protectant for the engine, just spray it on, let it sit for a couple of minutes and wipe off excess. That will really make the engine pop!
And the most important thing - Have fun!
