A lot of things go wrong in the 2.8 and mechanics usually diagnose it as piston rings from the start.
1.4M40T pumps have an infamous reputation to have a leaky gear side pump seal. When oil pressure develops engine oil tends to flow in to the pump and directly burned in the engine.
Valve seals are mostly leaky and high pressure oil flow in the cam is seeping through the valves.
Turbos oil side seal is gone. You can tell by removing the blowby pipe and running the engine. If there is still oil in the turbo there is your bugger.
Oil cooler is not working properly and oil is vaporizing and out into the air intake. Non-turbo grade oil is also a factor in oil vaporization.
Finally piston rings. Its easy to diagnose with a compression tester. If compression is down than the lowest limit then i'm afraid the engine is in its last leg.
