Default Dawn: Changes to car import duties for Budget 2012/13

Do you anticipate the following news to have an affect on prices?

If you were getting a 2006 Prado, would you wait until after the budget or get it now?

Commercial import of used vehicles sought | ePaper | DAWN.COM

Commercial import of used vehicles sought
By Our Staff Reporter | 3/8/2012 1200 AM

KARACHI, March 7: Chairman All Pakistan Motor Dealers Association (APMDA) H.M. Shahzad has urged the government to allow commercial import of used vehicles up to 10 years of age as many people cannot afford to buy costly locally assembled vehicles.

In proposals for 2012-2013 Budget he said allowing commercial imports in addition to existing schemes for import of used cars like transfer of residence, gift and baggage schemes would be in line with the government`s policy of documentation of the economy and would generate more revenue.

He said only certified members of the APMDA would be allowed to import used vehicles on commercial basis for the sake of transparency in trade.

In transfer of residence scheme, he said there should be no restriction of age limit for the import of used vehicles.

He said the importers are paying 50 per cent regulatoryduty on import of vehicles above 1,800cc cars and jeeps.

The government, he said, should impose a fixed rate of duty on the import of used vehicles above 1,800cc. The local car industry will not feel the pinch as they do not assemble above 1,800cc vehicles.

Shahzad said that local car assemblers are enjoying the monopoly as they take 100 per cent advance payment at the time of car booking from the customers and take months to deliver it. As a result, many authorised dealers having stocks in hand start charging premium on spot buying.

He said the government should check as to why promised levels of deletion have not been achieved by the assemblers despite passage of many years.

He said the car assemblers had been frequently increasing the prices on rupee-yendollar fluctuations but in real terms they have raised the prices more than the actual impact of currency.

Yes the local assemblers should be questioned on why hasnt localization been achived?
Get over the fact that Xli lacks power windows, Its an Xli because it lacks thoose features or else it would be a Gli or an Altis if had all the goodies.

I seriously doubt they would let 10-year old vehicles be imported.

This is also fact that imported Used Cars are priced more than locally assembled new cars. Like Used Suzuki Alto is priced more than Mehran New. Few days before I have a Suzuki Cervo that was priced 950,000 and was 4 years old, then why not local made Cultus. No advantage of used cars imports policy when they are not cost effective.

@mfdarvesh Yeah Bro,you u r right but u are only looking at one aspect. Now compare the options of both the cars. Cervo has ABS brakes, Air Bags, Power steering n windows, automatic transmission and much other options. Now cultus doesn't even have anything besides power steering. The local manufactures provide us very basic cars at a very high price. Even if the imported cars are more costly, still they provide us with every standard feature!
Fast cars are my only choice!!!

    first of, it is all

    he said.........he said..he said........lol he can say anything...uncle sam.....dont care.

second of all opening 10 year imports will be a total stupidity.it is one of the most pathetic ideas ever.

    reason.

goverment will loose heavy in taxes which they collect from local car manufacturers.

lcm production will decrese, hence less profit, collapse of industry just like faisalabad and many others which will over all effect the economy. huge domino effect.

    loss of employment downsizing.

country will be full of discarded matterial from the rest of the world. hehe so u guyz will get trash basicly.

on the other hand mva motor vehicle accociation of pakistan will mantain same old prices for crap.

as u see above he mentions,to give sole rights to mva importers only so the only ppl who benifit is no one as with this crap mayb on the short run the importers may make some money, but not long enaugh.
