Default Manager burned to death in Indian car plant riot

NEW DELHI, July 19: India’s top carmaker Maruti Suzuki on Thursday suspended production at a plant near New Delhi after a manager was burnt to death and scores of others injured in a riot by angry workers.
Maruti identified the dead man as the plant’s personnel manager, Avnish Kumar Dev, whose charred body was found after the rampage late on Wednesday during which supervisors were attacked and offices set on fire.
“We are deeply disturbed by the mob violence,” Maruti said in a statement that praised Dev as “deeply committed to cordial industrial relations” at the Manesar plant 50 kilometres from the capital.
The carmaker, owned by Japan’s Suzuki Motor, said the plant’s offices were “burnt beyond repair” while nearly 100 of its managers had to be hospitalised, some with serious injuries.
The workers, some wielding iron rods, fanned out in groups, beating managers “on their head, legs and back, rendering many of their victims bleeding and unconscious”, the company said.
A number suffered broken bones, head wounds and other injuries, a Maruti executive told AFP, while two Japanese executives, including the Manesar plant manager, were also in hospital with undisclosed injuries.
Maruti, which makes 550,000 vehicles a year at the plant said it would announce its decision shortly “on the next steps with regard to resuming operations”.
“This is the most serious labour unrest I have seen in the last few years,” Deepesh Rathore, managing director of IHS Automotive India, a consultancy, said.Manager burned to death in Indian car plant riot -446161Manager burned to death in Indian car plant riot -446162Manager burned to death in Indian car plant riot -446163Manager burned to death in Indian car plant riot -446164Manager burned to death in Indian car plant riot -446165Manager burned to death in Indian car plant riot -446166Manager burned to death in Indian car plant riot -446167Manager burned to death in Indian car plant riot -446168Manager burned to death in Indian car plant riot -446169Manager burned to death in Indian car plant riot -446170Manager burned to death in Indian car plant riot -446171

wow i am amazed to what level the workers being pressurized or denied their rights that they were forced to take matters into their own hands. There is something seriously wrong with how things are being run there and i hope it gets well soon

I feel sad for the family of the victims but 'Just in Time' management has proven to be a big failure in this part of sub continent. Japs were wrong this time..

Pity. It'll take time but I hope the company recovers fast and is back on its wheels soon.

Agreed. Either there is something seriously wrong at management's end or this event was sponsored by rivals of Suzuki. Employees can't take such bold steps at their own. Otherwise labour really don't like riots because they are poor & usually have big families to support. Even here in Pakistan, you can see that 90% of people involved in Public riots are either political workers or are foreign agents. Ordinary people actually hate these things.

    Default Tragic death

This is a classic case of conflict between contract and organized labor boiling over at this plant and middle management's utter failure to organize these two groups effectively. In India , middle management is good only for boot licking and making power point presentations.

Cmon dude a guy died several injured, and it was not only burning there were head and other body injuries indicating that they were tortured. do you seriously wan't that?

It could be very damaging for the future investment prospect in India, but I am sure their Govt. will take efficient steps.

happens man - pay a visit to PS.. you will come to know why it happened in India. India btw is filled with more "thingie, presentation, funda, fizool - middle management. The type that would try to prove that if it takes 20 people to make a car in 4 hours in 2000 sq ft of space, 200000 people can make it in seconds in the same space.Makes you want to smack them.

labor unions in India mostly carry sociailist mind set. Equal share for everyone while FEW work. Sad to see damage to human life. No wonder Maruti is shifting plants more towards eastern punjab then Centre & South.

i think this incidence must be investigated.
something bad must have happened on part of the management..
cheap labour doesnt mean depriving one of rights..

while Suzuki charge heavily as their labour cost I remember talking to a Pak Suzuki mechanic and he said that his salary was too less than the mechanics working on their own out in streets..
