There is something in the guide I find misleading.
The API rating comments are like
"It is for 2004 and older automotive engines."
"It is for 1996 and older automotive engine."
Sorry but exactly whats the logic behind this ? Whereas these rating are all API revised and indicate the quality of the oil rather than the engine its meant for (Manufacturer usually advise the oil, usually a certain viscosity rating) ... but in no way can u say This rating is for older/newer engines. The guide seems to be suggesting that I shouldnt use a high rated SM/SL oil in my 87 GTti or Integra ... instead use 1996 and older ... obsolete oil ?

Dear:
it is not like what u think about engine oil guide
first of all the year mentioned agaisnt grades are given by API (American Petrolium Institute) them self and the main perpose of that is to identify the engine life as if a engine is of 1996 model when it get new overhauling it became new because its clearance between Pistan rings and cylinder wall once again minimize after it get overhauling
API Grading are backward compatible if in guide SL and SM are the Latest API grades its mean that they can be use in all older engines
if you need further information you can contact me
it will be my pleasure to share infromations

@SKZIC
All API are not backward compatible with previous Specifications for example CJ-4 is not with CD, CE etc.
