A Tour to Changan’s R&D Center in China

136

As part of PakWheels’ exclusive tour to Beijing, our team is now at the Changan R&D Center, where the company is showcasing some of its latest products, concepts, and mobility ideas.

From production-ready SUVs to highly experimental urban mobility machines, this visit gives an interesting look into how Changan is shaping its next generation of vehicles.

Among the many things on display, a few stood out immediately. Some are relevant for mainstream buyers, while others feel like they have arrived straight from a sci-fi film.

Here are the handpicked highlights from our visit that are worth your attention.

What’s Relevant for Pakistan

Changan unveiled the UNI-S in Pakistan just a week earlier. It’s from the same family as UNI-S, uses the same Blue Whale DNA, and even has the same design language as UNI-S.

The UNI-S is, however, an upper-segment car rather than the CS75, but it still makes sense for the Pakistani audience from many angles.

VIA New Vehicle

Now this is where things got properly futuristic.

One of the most eye-catching displays at the Changan R&D Center was the VIA New Vehicle.

Yes, New Vehicle is the name of the vehicle, after it was translated from Chinese.

Changan presents it as an intelligent mobility concept with a personality of its own, and it looks nothing like a conventional car.

The attached vehicle image shows a dramatic three-seater cabin layout, a Cyberpunk-style open design, and sculpted seats. It is a concept vehicle, however, and not for production.

What Changan Says About VIA

Changan describes VIA as a futuristic intelligent mobility concept. In the material shared at the R&D Center, the company uses the Chinese term “新汽车”, which translates to “New Vehicle.” Meanwhile, VIA appears to be the vehicle or brand name attached to this concept.

The main tagline used by the company is:

“好看 · 好开 · 好玩”的三好智能汽车机器人
which translates to:

 “A three-good intelligent car robot”

The company also stated that Changan is building VIA around three core ideas:

  1. Good-looking
  2. Easy to drive
  3. Fun to interact with

Mazda EZ-60

Another interesting vehicle we came across at the Changan R&D Center was the Mazda EZ-60. At first glance, it might feel surprising to see a Mazda at Changan’s facility, but there is a solid reason behind it.

Mazda operates in China through a joint venture with Changan, commonly known as Changan Mazda. Under this partnership, Changan not only handles local production but also plays a role in research and development for Mazda’s China-specific models. That is why vehicles like the EZ-60 are being showcased here.

Based on the information displayed, the vehicle is expected to come in both range-extender (REEV) and fully electric (BEV) variants:
