AI-Powered Traffic Cameras Coming to Punjab
In a remarkable stride towards fortifying road safety, the Punjab Safe City Authority has taken a pioneering step by introducing cutting-edge artificial intelligence-based software.
This groundbreaking development aims to identify motorcyclists who flout safety regulations by not wearing helmets. The announcement, shared across the authority’s social media platforms on Thursday, underscores a commitment to leveraging technology for public welfare.
Last year, the caretaker government in Punjab had substantially increased fines for helmet-less motorcyclists, raising the penalty from Rs. 200 to Rs. 2,000 across the province. The move was part of a comprehensive strategy to instill a culture of responsible driving and safeguard citizens on the roads.
Recently, Chief Traffic Officer Ammara Athar issued directives to intensify the crackdown on traffic violations in the provincial capital. The proactive approach is reflected in the statistics shared by the traffic police department spokesperson, revealing that over 16,000 motorcyclists received challans for helmet violations.
Driving License Fee Hiked Up To 2600%
The Punjab government has recently implemented a drastic hike in driving license fees, leaving motorists in disbelief and financial distress. Effective from January 17, 2023, the new fee structure has seen an astronomical surge, with some categories experiencing an alarming increase of up to 2600%.
New Fee Structure
- Motorcyclists, who were previously paying a reasonable 60 rupees for a 5-year license, are now faced with an exorbitant fee of Rs. 4900 – an alarming 791% increase.
- Car and Jeep owners, not spared from this financial blow, now face a 1100% surge, with fees skyrocketing from Rs. 550 to Rs. 11400.
- The Light Transport (LTV) category witnesses an unprecedented 1205% increase, with fees soaring from Rs. 550 to a whopping Rs. 12400.
- However, the Heavy Transport (HTV) category takes the lead in this fee frenzy, witnessing an alarming 2656% surge from Rs. 950 to Rs. 12400.
- Even tractor and commercial tractor owners are not exempt from the financial squeeze, as their fees witness a substantial 2100% increase, catapulting from Rs. 450 to Rs. 9900.
