BMW Teases New Electric i3 on Neue Klasse Platform
BMW is preparing to unveil its next-generation electric sedan, the all-new BMW i3, on March 18. The upcoming model will introduce the brand’s new Neue Klasse EV platform, which is expected to underpin several future electric BMW models.
The electric i3 will effectively serve as the battery-electric counterpart to the BMW 3 Series, one of the company’s most important global nameplates. According to reports from AutoExpress, the new i3 will be among the first production vehicles built on BMW’s next-generation EV architecture.
The model will follow the upcoming electric iX3 SUV, covered by us, which is also expected to debut on the Neue Klasse platform.
Neue Klasse Platform and Technology
The upcoming i3 marks a major shift in BMW’s electric vehicle strategy. Unlike earlier EV conversions, the Neue Klasse architecture is designed specifically for electric vehicles.
Key improvements expected from the platform include:
- Higher efficiency through improved battery packaging
- Lighter vehicle structure using steel and aluminum
- More advanced software and electrical architecture
- Improved driving dynamics for future BMW EVs
The platform will also introduce BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, which includes updated electric motors and new battery chemistry.
Expected Performance and Charging
Early reports suggest the new electric sedan could bring significant improvements in range and charging capability.
Potential highlights include:
Sixth-Generation eDrive System
- Higher energy density batteries
- More efficient electric motors
- Improved thermal management
800-Volt Electrical Architecture
- Charging speeds potentially reaching up to 400 kW
- Significantly shorter charging times compared with current BMW EVs
Performance Variant
- Expected model: BMW i3 50 xDrive
- Estimated output: around 345 kW (469 hp)
- Torque: approximately 645 Nm
- Dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup
Driving Range
- Estimated up to 500 miles (WLTP) according to industry reports
- Improved efficiency enabled by Neue Klasse battery technology
BMW has not officially confirmed these specifications yet, and final figures will likely be revealed closer to launch.
Original BMW i3 vs New Electric i3
The upcoming model represents a major transformation of the i3 nameplate.
| Feature | Original i3 (Discontinued 2022) | New i3 Sedan (Neue Klasse) |
| Segment | Subcompact EV Hatchback | Compact Executive Electric Sedan |
| Platform | LifeDrive Architecture | Neue Klasse Dedicated EV Platform |
| Range | ~150–190 miles (WLTP) | ~500 miles (estimated) |
| Charging | Up to 50 kW | Up to 400 kW (expected) |
| Drivetrain | Rear-Wheel Drive | RWD and xDrive AWD |
While the original i3 focused on urban mobility, the new model aims to compete in the premium electric sedan segment.
Production and Launch Timeline
Production of the new BMW i3 is expected to begin at BMW’s Munich plant in the second half of 2026, with global sales likely starting before the end of the year.
The model will mark the beginning of a broader rollout of Neue Klasse vehicles, which BMW plans to expand across multiple segments over the next few years.
Will Pakistan experience the i3 Luxury?
BMW’s electric lineup is gradually expanding globally, although EV availability in Pakistan remains limited.
Some electric BMW models, such as the iX3, have appeared in the country through private imports, but there has been no official confirmation regarding the launch of the upcoming electric i3.
If introduced locally in the future, the model could become one of the first premium electric sedans available in Pakistan’s luxury car segment.
For now, the March 18 debut should provide a clearer picture of BMW’s next-generation electric sedan and its role in the company’s broader EV strategy.
