The federal government has earmarked billions of rupees for highway and motorway development under the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP) 2026-27, with several projects expected to improve connectivity, reduce travel times, and strengthen freight movement across Pakistan.
According to the official budget documents, the National Highway Authority (NHA) has received a development allocation of over Rs. 224 billion. The main focus this year is on improving existing national highways and completing important ongoing road projects.
N-25 Highway Gets the Biggest Share
The biggest focus is the N-25 Highway, which connects Karachi, Quetta, and Chaman. The government has allocated a total of Rs. 100 billion for different sections of this route.
Kararo-Wadh and Kuchlak-Chaman Sections
The government has allocated Rs. 48 billion for the dualization of the Kararo-Wadh and Kuchlak-Chaman sections of N-25.
Karachi-Kararo and Wadh-Khuzdar Sections
Another Rs. 30 billion has been allocated for the dualization and rehabilitation of the Karachi-Karachi and Wadh-Khuzdar sections.
Khuzdar-Kuchlak Section
The Khuzdar-Kuchlak section has received Rs. 22 billion for the dualization of this important stretch.
Other Major Road Projects
Indus Highway N-55
The Indus Highway dualization from Sarai Gambila to Kohat has received Rs. 2.62 billion. This route is important for traffic and freight movement between Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Basima to Khuzdar Highway
The Basima to Khuzdar Highway has received Rs. 1 billion for the construction of a two-lane highway, helping connect remote parts of Balochistan with major road networks.
Gwadar-Ratodero Road Project M-8
The Gwadar-Ratodero Road Project has received Rs. 1 billion. This project is important for linking Gwadar Port with the national highway network.
Hakla/Burhan to D.I. Khan Motorway
The Hakla/Burhan to D.I. Khan Motorway has been allocated Rs. 1 billion to support ongoing work on this key route.
Peshawar Northern Bypass Project
The Peshawar Northern Bypass Project has received Rs. 1 billion to help improve traffic flow around Peshawar.
Rawalpindi-Kahuta Road Dualization
The Rawalpindi-Kahuta Road dualization project has been allocated Rs. 1 billion to improve traffic movement on this busy route.
Old Bannu Road Dualization
The Old Bannu Road dualization and improvement project has received Rs. 760 million.
Pindigheb-Kohat Road Dualization
The Pindigheb-Kohat Road dualization project has received Rs. 500 million to improve traffic flow between the two areas.
CAREC Corridor Development Program Tranche-I
The CAREC Corridor Development Program Tranche-I has been allocated Rs. 830 million to support regional transit and trade routes.
What It Means for Drivers
The PSDP 2026-27 road budget shows that the government is focusing more on completing and improving existing routes rather than solely announcing new projects.
For drivers, transporters, and logistics companies, the biggest impact will come from work on the N-25 and N-55 corridors. Once completed, these upgrades should improve road safety, reduce travel time, and make freight movement smoother across Balochistan, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
