BYD Breaks Another Record Previously Held By Global Top Automakers

Chinese automaker BYD achieved a major milestone in 2025 by landing among the world’s best-selling vehicle manufacturers and edging past Ford in global sales volume.

According to industry data, BYD delivered approximately 4.6 million vehicles last year, compared with Ford’s roughly 4.4 million units, marking the first time the Shenzhen-based company has outpaced the iconic U.S. brand in overall sales.

Strong EV and Export Growth Fuels Momentum

BYD’s strategy, focused entirely on new energy vehicles (NEVs), including battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids, continues to pay dividends.

The company not only defended its position as one of the largest global NEV sellers for the fourth consecutive year but also saw its BEV deliveries exceed those of long-time EV rival Tesla in 2025.

Exports played a key role in BYD’s surge. The automaker shipped more than 1 million vehicles overseas last year, a sharp increase over prior years, driven by growth in markets across Europe, Latin America, and Southeast Asia.

Implications for the Auto Industry

BYD’s rise reflects broader shifts in the global automotive industry as electrification accelerates and Chinese manufacturers leverage competitive EV technology and global expansion strategies.

Legacy automakers facing slower EV transitions have struggled to keep pace, contributing to shifting rankings on the global sales leaderboard.

For those interested in how this trend might affect vehicle availability and pricing, particularly in emerging markets and EV segments, BYD’s momentum suggests a continued push of Chinese EVs into new regions and consumer segments.

What’s Next

Official confirmation of full 2025 global rankings from major auto industry analysts is expected in the coming months and could provide further clarity on BYD’s place relative to the world’s biggest automakers.

In the meantime, BYD’s sales surge highlights how quickly the auto world is evolving around electrification and new global players.
