Car sales down by 42%: PAMA Report
Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA) has released its sales data for cars and bikes for July 2019, and according to the figures, the market is not doing great. Note here that local automakers sold 12,482 units of vehicles in July 2019 as against 21,344 units in the same period of the corresponding year – which means the sales are down by 42%.
Honda and Toyota Still Suffers
Both the Honda Civic & Honda City aren’t selling in good numbers. With only 1452 units sold of the Civic & City combined, this represents a massive 68% drop in sales as compared to July of 2018. On the other side, Toyota did sell more units of Corolla than its rivals, but with just 1981 people taking a Corolla home last month (July) this is again a massive drop of 57% compared to the same month of the corresponding year. For perspective 4566 units of Corolla were sold out to customers in July of 2018.
Suzuki has its ups and downs
Suzuki Wagon R was selling like hotcakes last year but the recent months have been very unforgiving. The Wagon-R units sold last month (July 2019) are just 843. To make you realize how bad the sales are, back in July 2018 Suzuki sold 2772 units, making it a fall of 70%. It sure is alarming. However, unlike other competitors in the market, it’s not all bad news for Suzuki. Thanks to the all-new Alto, Suzuki once again claims its strong presence on the roads again. The sales have been impressive with 4584 units sold in July 2019 alone. If we compare this data with the sales of Suzuki Mehran from July last year, 3437 units were sold out to customers, which makes the Alto sales 25% higher than that of Mehran.
The fate of Pickups/SUV’s
Let’s say that if economy sector vehicles are struggling quite a lot. Then one can only imagine the chaos at the upper end of the segment (price-wise). With that said Toyota Hilux sales are down by 48%, which means that in July 2019 only 358 units of Hilux were taken home by the customers whereas last year in July this number was almost double.
Fortuner is consistently selling all-time low. But this time only 74 units of the Fortuner found their way to a garage. Sadly the overall sales are down by 68% as compared to July of 2018 during which 220 units were sold.
Similarly, Honda BR-V sales have plunged once again. And this July (2019) only 242 units found a customer, which is even fewer sales than June 2019 (452 units). An overall loss of 34% in sales as compared to July 2018 when 372 units were handed over to buyers.
Even though the latest entrant in the pickup segment “D-Max” isn’t doing very great. Still, Isuzu managed to sell a healthy 61 units to the customers.
This shows that the commutative sales of all segments in the car industry for the fiscal year 2019 has once again seen a considerable decline.
Along with motorcars, the sales of motorbikes isn’t improving at all. It is all bad news this month because every company, including big or small, have seen a significant downfall in terms of unit sold in July 2019 as compared to July 2018.
In July 2019 Yamaha sold 1817 motorcycles which is more than what they sold in June. While Suzuki is another major competitor in this segment, and with only selling 1614 motorcycles has also shown a decline in sales. Similarly, despite Atlas Honda dominating the market but still wasn’t so lucky since it also lost sales both in cumulative and monthly sales with around 80,005 units sold in July 2019.
For a clear perspective, in July 2018:
- Yamaha sold 2159 units
- Suzuki sold 1901 units
- Honda sold 90,009 units
This shows a downfall of 16%, 16%, and 12% respectively.
The commutative sales of motorcycles for the fiscal year of 2018 was 1,923,334, which has now decreased to 1,721,719 in the fiscal year 2019 — a decline in sales of around 11% which was previously 6%.
While talking to PakWheels.com, an industry expert said that the market is hurting due to the government’s inconsistent economic policies, FED on cars, rupee depreciation and higher vehicle prices which have limited the buying capacity of the masses.
Moreover, it is also imperative to mention here that the production of Honda Cars remained closed from July 12-21 and the company is also observing Saturday as an off-day for the last couple of months which might have affected the sales of the company. Similarly, IMC also did not roll out vehicles for eight days in July.
