China–Pakistan Cooperation Expands to EV Infrastructure and Green Urban Innovation

194

China and Pakistan are expanding cooperation in electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure and green urban innovation, with a focus on charging networks, clean mobility solutions, and sustainable urban transport.

The collaboration reflects a broader shift toward electric mobility, smart infrastructure, and environmentally sustainable city planning, as both countries explore ways to modernise urban transport and reduce emissions.

Focus on EV Infrastructure

A key area of cooperation is the development of EV charging infrastructure, including the installation of public charging stations and support systems for electric transport.

Experts say expanding charging networks could accelerate the adoption of electric cars, buses, and two-wheelers in Pakistan’s major cities, where limited charging facilities remain a major barrier.

In addition, EV charging infrastructure will become mandatory across nearly all 138 fuel stations in the capital. Existing fuel stations will be required to install at least one EV charging point, while new stations must establish a minimum of two charging points.

China, the world’s largest EV market, has significant experience in EV manufacturing, battery technology, and large-scale charging networks, which could help Pakistan strengthen its emerging EV ecosystem.

Supporting EV Adoption in Pakistan

The cooperation also aligns with Pakistan’s National Electric Vehicle Policy, which aims to increase EV adoption to reduce fuel consumption and urban air pollution.

Cities such as Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad could benefit from wider EV adoption through:

  • Lower fuel consumption
  • Reduced urban air pollution
  • Improved transport energy efficiency
  • Growth of EV-related industries

What It Means

If implemented effectively, stronger cooperation on EV infrastructure could help accelerate electric mobility adoption in Pakistan and support the transition toward cleaner urban transportation.

Further details on specific projects and timelines are expected as both countries continue discussions on green urban innovation and electric mobility cooperation.
