StarCharge Energy Pakistan has signed a memorandum of understanding with Chinese company Bahum Global Limited to establish electric vehicle charging stations across Pakistan.
Under the agreement, Bahum Global will provide technological support and work with the Pakistani company on developing the charging network. The partnership will also cover technology transfer and potential local manufacturing of related equipment.
EV Charging Network to Expand Nationwide
The agreement is intended to strengthen Pakistan’s emerging electric vehicle ecosystem by improving access to public charging facilities.
Pakistan has seen a gradual increase in the number of electric cars and motorcycles entering the market, but the limited availability of reliable charging stations remains a major concern for buyers. Expanding the network could make EV ownership more practical, particularly for intercity travel and for consumers without access to private home charging.
However, the companies have not yet announced the number of charging stations, their proposed locations, or a rollout timeline.
Government Backs Electric Mobility
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan said the government was working to promote electric mobility and local lithium-ion battery manufacturing.
He added that the upcoming Battery Energy Storage System Policy was expected to attract foreign investment and support the development of a sustainable energy-storage and electric mobility industry in Pakistan.
The government expects the transition towards electric transport to reduce Pakistan’s dependence on imported petroleum products, lower the fuel import bill and improve energy security.
What It Means for EV Buyers
A wider charging network could address one of the biggest barriers facing prospective EV buyers in Pakistan: uncertainty over where and how reliably they can charge their vehicles.
The MoU is an initial step, however, and its actual impact will depend on how quickly the companies move from agreement to installation. Pricing, station reliability, compatibility with different EV brands, and coverage outside major cities will ultimately determine whether the project meaningfully improves the ownership experience.
