Fear of FIRs Works: Punjab Issues Record 12 Lakh Licenses in Just 7 Days

Following the Chief Minister of Punjab’s directive for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, the provincial government has released new statistics that show the impact of these measures.

The latest data shows that the administration’s “zero-tolerance” approach is finally reshaping the province’s road safety culture.

It all started last month, when the Punjab Government decided to take a hard stance against traffic violations, leading to a massive 900% increase in fines.

But the crackdown went beyond just challans; traffic police even started impounding vehicles and issuing FIRs for motorists driving without licenses.

The enforcement was so rigorous that last week, the government even amended policy to allow 16-year-olds to obtain motorcycle licenses (though no official notification has been issued yet), ensuring that young riders had a legal pathway to avoid the crackdown.

These tough decisions are bearing fruit. According to the latest statistics released by the Punjab government, traffic violations have dropped significantly, and road safety has seen notable improvements:

  • The number of vehicles emitting excess smoke on the roads has decreased by 75%
  • Incidents of underage drivers on the road have dropped by 86%
  • The total number of new driving licenses issued has reached an impressive 12,11,294
  • 935% increase in the number of licenses issued compared to previous months.
  • The total number of accidents involving motorcyclists has decreased by 61%

Under this new zero-tolerance approach, the Punjab government remains unyielding. Last week, the Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) confirmed to PakWheels that the department is showing no mercy and continues to register FIRs against unlicensed motorists.

Therefore, we strongly urge all unlicensed motorists to get their licenses immediately before the traffic police stop you, impound your vehicle, and issue an FIR against you.
