Fuel Sales Dropped 8% as Prices Hit Record Highs

Pakistan’s fuel companies sold less petrol and diesel in April compared to March. Overall sales fell by 6% in just one month, and even compared to April 2025, sales are down 7%, ArifHabib reported.

People Filled Up Less Petrol

In April, petrol sales dropped 8% compared to last month and 7% compared to last year.

With pump prices going up, many everyday drivers are cutting back on how much they fill their tanks. Although the government is providing fuel relief to bikers, it does not reverse the situation as it was before the Iran-US conflict.

Here’s the table of petrol sales for 1-1 comparison:

Apr-26 Mar-26 MoM Apr-25 YoY
Petrol 610,000 670,000 -8% 660,000 -7%

Trucks and Businesses Also Pulled Back on Diesel

Diesel, used mostly by trucks, factories, and farms, also saw a 7% drop from the previous month. Even compared to the same time last year, diesel sales are down 12%.

Here’s the table of diesel sales for 1-1 comparison:

Apr-26 Mar-26 MoM Apr-25 YoY
Diesel 550,000 590,000 -7% 620,000 -12%

The Reason is the Fuel Price Hike

Petrol and diesel prices in Pakistan have gone through their most painful increases in recent memory over the past few months.

In late February, petrol used to cost around Rs. 268 per liter. Then, in March 2026, the government hiked both petrol and diesel by Rs. 55 overnight due to the Iran-US conflict.

A few weeks later came the real shock, on April 3, petrol jumped to Rs. 458 and diesel hit Rs. 520, the highest prices ever seen in Pakistan’s history, triggered by a disruption to a major oil shipping route near Iran.

The government rolled back part of the increase by Rs. 80 within 24 hours, but prices continued to creep up. As of now, both petrol and diesel are hovering around Rs. 400 per liter.

In just four months, petrol went from Rs. 263 to Rs. 400. That is why fewer people filled up their tanks in April.
