GAC Hyptec HT Highway Test: Real-World Range From Lahore to Islamabad

We are back on the tarmac for the second episode of our highway range test series, and this time, we are piloting the highly anticipated GAC Hyptec HT.

The Hyptec HT is GAC’s premium all-electric crossover designed to turn heads. But how does it handle the brutal reality of Pakistan’s Lahore-to-Islamabad Motorway? Can an EV with a claimed 620 km range actually make it up Kallar Kahar at legal highway speeds without leaving you stranded?

Let’s look at the real-world numbers, the ADAS quirks, and the cabin comfort of the Hyptec HT.

The Variant: Hyptec HT (Non-Gullwing)

The unit tested is the single-motor, Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) version. While the top-tier variant gets crazy Tesla Model X-style motor-operated gullwing rear doors, this entry-level variant keeps things grounded (and significantly more practical).

Key Specs at a Glance

  • Battery Capacity: 83 kWh (featuring GAC’s signature “Magazine” battery safety technology)
  • Power Output: 320 hp
  • Torque: 380 Nm
  • 0–100 km/h: 5.8 seconds (claimed)
  • Claimed Range (NEDC): 620 km
  • Charging Speed: Ultra-fast charging capable (up to 80% in 15 minutes on a compatible DC fast charger)

How It Differs from the Top Variant

  1. Manual Doors: Both front and rear doors are manually operated (no gullwing mechanism).
  2. Aero Disc Wheel Covers: They have the same rim size but feature distinct aerodynamic disc covers for maximum efficiency.
  3. Interior Color Palette: Offers a different, multi-toned interior color scheme.

Lahore to Islamabad (The 120 km/h Anxiety Trip)

To give the Hyptec HT a true highway test, we set Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keep Assist, and Lane Centering to on, maintaining the maximum legal motorway speed limit of 120 km/h.

At 100% charge, the instrument cluster proudly displayed a 620 km NEDC range. However, the car’s dynamic range (calculated based on real-time driving habits) immediately dropped to a more realistic 243 km, leaving a remaining trip distance of 232 km.

This is where the classic EV range anxiety kicked in.

The Kallar Kahar Battery Drain

Ascending the steep Kallar Kahar salt range is the ultimate battery killer for any EV. Under constant high-speed uphill load, energy consumption surged to 18.9 kWh/100 km.

By the time we crossed the Salt Range, the situation looked grim:

  • Remaining Battery: 10%
  • NEDC Displayed Range: 60 km
  • Dynamic Range: 41 km
  • Distance to Destination: 46 km

Going into Survival Mode

With the dynamic range falling short of our destination by 5 km, we had to take drastic measures:

  1. Turned off the AC with 37 km left.
  2. Reduced speed to 100 km/h, then to 40 km/h.
  3. Entered Super Power Saving Mode at 5% battery.

The Software Glitch: Once we activated Super Power Saving Mode at 4% battery, the cluster suddenly estimated an “Endurance Range” of 124 km. How the software mathematically pulled a 124 km range out of 4% battery remains a mystery, but we weren’t about to risk it. We rolled into our Islamabad charging station on sheer willpower with just 3% battery remaining, having covered 429 km in total since our last charge.

Cabin Comfort and Tech: The Pros and Cons

Cruising on the highway gives you plenty of time to evaluate the interior layout, driver ergonomics, and overall cabin insulation.

The Pros

  • Superb Rear Space: Thanks to a massive wheelbase, the interior is incredibly spacious. The rear seats feature a “boss seat” function with an electric leg rest, a fold-out tray, and an extreme recline angle.
  • Premium Seats: The front Nappa leather seats are heated and ventilated, with a massaging function and 4-way lumbar support.
  • UV-Protected Glass Roof: Despite direct sunlight hitting the massive panoramic glass roof, the cabin remained surprisingly cool, proving the UV coating works beautifully.
  • Low Wind Noise: Thanks to a highly aerodynamic drag coefficient of just 0.245, wind noise at 120 km/h is almost non-existent.
  • Audio Experience: The 22-speaker premium sound system is absolutely phenomenal.

The Cons

  • Steering Finish: While the steering wheel is wrapped in perforated leather, the stitching on the inner surface feels noticeably rough. The horn pad is also finished in a cheap-feeling, hard plastic.
  • Annoying Fatigue Sensor: The camera-based driver-monitoring system is overly sensitive. It repeatedly chimed warnings to “Pay Attention!” even when the driver’s eyes were on the road, prompting us to turn it off entirely.
  • Screen Glare and Brightness: The massive 14.6-inch center touchscreen suffers from low peak brightness. At certain angles, light reflecting from the driver-side window completely washed out parts of the screen.
  • Tire Noise: On coarse, granular sections of the motorway, a significant amount of tire roar penetrated the cabin, made more pronounced by the lack of engine noise.

The Return Journey (The 110 km/h Downhill Win)

For our journey back to Lahore, we decided to make a slight tactical adjustment. Instead of pushing the car to 120 km/h, we locked the cruise control at 110 km/h (just 10 km/h slower) to see how it affected efficiency.

The results were night and day:

By dropping our speed by just 10 km/h and using regenerative braking on the downhill through Kallar Kahar, we reached our destination in Lahore with a highly comfortable 16% battery remaining, all while keeping the AC running at full blast. No range anxiety, no panic, and no heart attacks.

The Verdict

The GAC Hyptec HT is an exceptional electric crossover. It offers incredible road presence, instantaneous electric torque, brilliant handling, and a rear executive seating experience that rivals luxury limousines.

Our test proves that modern EVs are more than capable of handling long-distance travel on Pakistani highways. However, it also highlights two crucial realities:

  1. Driving Style is Everything: Pushing an EV at 120 km/h on a hilly motorway ruins its efficiency. Dropping down to 110 km/h makes the drive stress-free.
  2. Infrastructure is Key: To truly unlock the potential of premium long-range EVs like the Hyptec HT, Pakistan desperately needs a denser, highly reliable network of highway DC fast chargers.
