Green lane for slow moving traffic launched on Mall road

In a bid to improve the traffic system in the provincial capital, the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) has kicked-off the pilot project of the green lane from Mall road, Lahore.

The initiative is applauded all over the social media platforms by the general public and remains the hot topic of debate whether the authorities would be able to implement the traffic sense among the road users or not. Nonetheless, the project that promises to bring a smooth flow of traffic has been launched on 28th April 2019. The leftmost lane is marked with green for 20 meters after 60 meters distance on the Mall road for guidance. The directives indicate that the dedicated lane could only be used by motorbikes, buses, rickshaws and other slow moving traffic. The cars will be able to move in the higher lane without any interference from the two-wheelers or heavy vehicles. Furthermore, several signs and directive boards have also been installed by PSCA.

On the directives of Chief Minister of Punjab Usman Buzdar, the authority has decided to bring reforms in the deteriorating situation of traffic in Lahore. Currently, there are as many as 9 motorbikes on the road for each car which clarifies the challenges faced by the commuters moving from one point to another. With that many motorbikes surrounding cars, the chances of accidents rise significantly. Those travelling on motorbikes also change lanes swiftly which results in creating a sense of confusion among others.

On this occasion, the spokesperson of PSCA ensured that the city traffic police will cooperate with the authority in maintaining the lane discipline. The project will move to the Canal Road in the next phase where the entry of motorcycle rickshaws has been banned in order to maintain the traffic flow and reduce the number of accidents on the signal-free corridor. These rickshaws have already been banned on Mall road, Main Boulevard Gulberg and Jail road. However, the rickshaw drivers have been directed to use the service road on Canal road. Traffic wardens will be introducing an awareness campaign for a period of two months. After this, strict legal action will be taken against the violators. The CTO also advised the citizens to avoid travelling on motorcycle rickshaws commonly known as Chingchi. Most of their drivers are under age that lack any sort of traffic sense. Moreover, the authority in collaboration with traffic police will also arrange awareness campaigns in the city to educate the public.

The new project will be monitored through the CCTV cameras of PSCA. Any lane violation would result in e-challan to allow the system to succeed in solving the traffic issues in the city. Being a responsible citizen, we should also play our part and follow the lane discipline to minimize the number of accidents. Nonetheless, it’s a bright step towards the improvement of the traffic system.
