After Metro Bus and Orange Train services, the Punjab government is now planning to launch another mass transit system in Lahore. This time, an electric tram is on the cards. The tram will go from Thokar Niaz Baig to Jallo along the Lahore Canal.

Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar chaired a meeting to review the electric tram project. He asked the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) to give a final shape to the project’s feasibility report so the government could proceed ahead with Pakistan’s first electric tram service.

PTI’s Development Schemes in Lahore

CM Buzdar said the PTI government is committed to improving the standard of facilities in Lahore. He asked the authorities to accelerate the work on ongoing projects in the city to facilitate the citizens.

Digging into the opposition, CM Buzdar said the previous governments launched development schemes worth Rs. 67 billion in Lahore during its third year in power, while the PTI government launched Rs. 86 billion worth of projects in its third year.

He criticized the previous governments for starting development projects without proper planning and burdening the provincial treasury. But “the PTI government has designed projects to improve the city’s infrastructure with prudent planning,” said Buzdar.

He continued to add that the development in Lahore is important for the PTI government, and the ongoing development work would improve the quality of life in the provincial capital.

We have seen three public transportation projects, Metro, Speedo, and Orange Line, in Lahore. All of these projects have made the citizens’ lives a lot easier. Another mass transit system would be great for the city, but an electric tram doesn’t sound too feasible. Electricity is an already scarce resource for our country. Not sure how the government will manage to run an electric train when there’s already a shortage of electricity for households.
