Jaecoo J7 PHEV Review: Real Fuel Savings After 12,500 KM

995

With the Pakistani automotive market undergoing a massive shift towards electrification, the Jaecoo J7 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) has emerged as an eye-catching contender.

Today, we bring you an in-depth owner’s review of the Jaecoo J7 PHEV, shared by Dr. Aneeq, a Lahore-based dentist. Having driven the vehicle for over 12,500 kilometers, Dr. Aneeq offers a highly detailed, honest account of what it is actually like to live with this modern SUV.

Why the Jaecoo J7 PHEV?

When Dr. Aneeq was searching for a premium SUV, the market was filled with standard hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). The J7 PHEV was the first plug-in hybrid of its kind to hit the market, closely followed by competitors such as the Haval H6 PHEV.

Ultimately, he chose the J7 over competitors for a few distinct reasons:

  • Ease of Use: His father primarily drives the car. Other competing models require a cumbersome process of manually shifting and configuring the drive systems every time you start the car.
  • Aesthetics: The interior color configurations of some competitors felt a bit too loud, whereas the J7’s clean cabin immediately felt right.
  • Interior Vibe: Other SUVs felt slightly like family vans or “wagons” from the driver’s perspective, whereas the J7 felt like a rugged, commanding SUV.

Exterior Styling: Rugged Land Rover DNA

It is no secret that the Jaecoo J7 looks like it belongs in the British countryside. Because Jaecoo’s parent company, Chery, has long-standing partnerships with Jaguar Land Rover, the design cues are clear.

The boxy silhouette, muscular wheel arches, and prominent grille give it an incredibly aggressive road presence. Opting for the solid black color elevates its stealthy, premium look. While it has become a common sight on Pakistani roads today, it still commands plenty of head-turning attention wherever it goes.

Interior: Simply Splendid

Dr. Aneeq sums up the interior of the J7 PHEV in one word: Splendid.

Instead of overwhelming the driver with flashy, unnecessary curves, the interior features a minimalist, deep black aesthetic. Soft-touch materials are generously used throughout the cabin, giving it a premium European feel.

Key Interior Highlights

  • Driver Comfort: An 8-way power-adjustable driver seat and a 4-way power-adjustable passenger seat. Both front seats are heated and ventilated.
  • Spacious Cabin: Dr. Aneeq, who stands at 6 feet tall, reports plenty of headroom and legroom in both the front and rear compartments.
  • Infotainment and Audio: The center screen is incredibly responsive, rivaling Tesla’s interface. It supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
  • Premium Sound: Equipped with a premium Sony Sound System. Dr. Aneeq notes that turning off “speed-dependent volume” helps deliver maximum clarity.

Performance and Drive Modes

Under the hood, the 1.5L turbocharged engine is paired with an 18.3 kWh battery. Power delivery is instantaneous. Unlike some competitors (such as the MG HS), which suffer from notable turbo lag before the turbo kicks in, the J7 PHEV delivers immediate torque with no jerky transitions.

Smart Energy Management

The infotainment screen allows the driver to toggle between three distinct hybrid energy modes:

  1. Initial Mode: Prioritizes battery power, allowing the state of charge to drop down to around 17–20% before engaging the engine.
  2. Smart Mode: Automatically switches the vehicle to hybrid operation when the battery drops from 100% to 30%.
  3. Force Mode: Perfect for hilly terrains. You can lock the battery state of charge (from 30% to 80%) to keep the engine engaged and maintain a power reserve.

Owner’s Driving Note:

“The J7 PHEV is exceptionally stable at speeds of 110–120 km/h. However, because it is a powerful front-wheel-drive (FWD) vehicle rather than all-wheel-drive, flooring the throttle from a standstill can cause a tiny bit of front-end torque steer.”

Fuel Average and Insane Cost Savings

The owner’s driving log shows a massive shift in fuel consumption and running costs. Dr. Aneeq has driven 12,500 km total, with 6,487 km driven on pure electric power (EV) and 6,013 km driven on hybrid power (HEV).

  • City Fuel Economy: 15 to 20 km/l (purely in hybrid mode).
  • Overall Average: Since purchase, the car has achieved a combined average of 21.5 km/l.
  • The Charging Math: Charging the car at home at WAPDA rates (roughly Rs. 50 per unit) costs about Rs. 900 per charge. Since the owner has a solar setup at home, his charging costs are virtually zero.

The Saved Wallet Test:

“If I drove a standard gasoline SUV, I would have spent roughly Rs. 200,000 on fuel. With the J7 PHEV, my electricity cost was only about Rs. 50,000. That is an instant saving of Rs. 150,000!”

Missing Features and Known Issues

While the J7 is well-equipped, there are always areas for improvement and minor bugs to watch out for.

  • Missing Features: At this premium price point, massage seats or zero-gravity seats would have been an excellent addition.
  • Door Alignment: Upon delivery, the front passenger door was slightly misaligned and difficult to close. The dealership quickly adjusted the hinges free of charge.
  • Panoramic Sunroof Squeak: Like many cars with massive panoramic sunroofs, a slight creaking sound developed over time as the rubber seals hardened.
    • Owner’s Fix: Applying a high-quality synthetic silicone paste to the rubber seals completely silences the noise.
  • Rear Suspension Noise: There is a known “nagging” clinking sound coming from the rear suspension bushes when driving over sharp angles or slants.

The Underbody Connector Issue (Resolved!)

Many Pakistani automotive enthusiasts recently saw videos online highlighting an issue in which high-voltage battery connectors were left exposed beneath the chassis (most notably after an incident in Taobat).

Fortunately, Jaecoo Pakistan acted swiftly. They proactively called Dr. Aneeq and installed a robust metal underbody shield at no cost to fully protect the connectors.

Maintenance and Spare Parts Costs

Maintaining a PHEV is surprisingly simple. Because the petrol engine runs only half the time, the service intervals are significantly extended.

  • Oil Change Interval: The vehicle is serviced based on its HEV (engine-run) mileage rather than total mileage. The first oil change is required after the engine itself has run 5,000 km.
  • First Oil Change Cost: Rs. 11,400 (highly affordable for a premium SUV).
  • Spare Parts Pricing: On the flip side, body parts are expensive. A replacement rear taillight assembly costs approximately Rs. 150,000.

Price and Registration

At the time of booking, the invoice price of the J7 PHEV was Rs. 10,000,000 (1 Crore). The current price has since been revised to Rs. 10,500,000 (1.05 Crore).

Registration and lifetime token tax charges came out to between Rs. 230,000 and Rs. 250,000.
