Karachi Traffic Police are preparing a broader crackdown on rickshaws, with officials proposing restrictions on all three-wheelers except vehicles operating with approved fare meters.
DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah said the department plans to remove Qingqi rickshaws from major roads and gradually restrict other rickshaw categories across the city. Meter-equipped rickshaws may be allowed to continue operating under the proposed policy.
However, no formal notification, implementation date, or enforcement plan has been announced so far.
What Is a Meter-Fitted Rickshaw?
A meter-fitted rickshaw is equipped with a fare meter that calculates the passenger’s fare based on the distance traveled, rather than relying on a negotiated price.
Wider Restrictions Under Consideration
The proposal appears to go beyond earlier route-specific restrictions imposed on major roads, including Shahrah-e-Faisal, University Road, Rashid Minhas Road, and Korangi Road.
Authorities say the move is aimed at reducing congestion, improving traffic flow, and bringing unregulated rickshaw operations under a formal system.
Metered Rickshaws May Be Exempt
According to traffic officials, an enforcement date will be announced before the crackdown begins, giving rickshaw owners time to install approved fare meters
Fare meters could reduce arbitrary pricing and disputes between passengers and drivers. However, installing meters alone will not resolve the problem unless the government also establishes official fare rates, inspection standards, and a system to prevent meter tampering.
Commuters Could Face Problems
Rickshaws remain an important last-mile transport option in areas with limited bus access. A citywide ban could affect students, office workers, and low-income commuters unless alternative public transport is expanded.
The policy may also face resistance from operators concerned about livelihoods and route restrictions.
For now, Karachi’s rickshaws have not been banned citywide. The traffic police have only announced a plan, while the final scope will depend on an official notification.
