KIA And Hyundai Recall Half Million Cars

The Korean car makers Kia and Hyundai are recalling half a million cars, mainly minivans and SUVs in the face of fire risk when the car is driven or even parked. The owners are advised to park their vehicles outdoors or away from the structures.

As per the details, the company cited a fault in the tow-hitch harness, whether it was purchased as an optional accessory or installed as a fitment from the factory. The automaker is concerned that water can accumulate on the harness module circuit board, which may cause a short circuit and ignite a fire.

Hyundai vehicles with faulty equipment include the 2019 to 2023 Santa Fe, the 2021 to 2023 Santa Fe Hybrid, the 2022 and 2023 Santa Fe Plug-in hybrid, and the 2022 and 2023 Santa Cruz. Whilst Kia Carnival minivan from 2022 and 2023 is also found in the list.

According to the details, out of 567,912 recalled Hyundai models, 1% came with the same default. Similarly, Kia also cited 1% defect rate out of recalled 3555 cars.

Hyundai has informed us that the company will first remove the tow-hitch harness from the defective vehicles and install a new fuse and wire extension kit once the repair is done. Meanwhile, Kia will install new fuse and wire extension kit after first it confirms the tow-hitch is company fitted.

A spokesperson for Hyundai stated, “All owners of the subject vehicles will be notified by first class mail with instructions to bring their vehicles to a Hyundai dealer for the verification of equipped Hyundai accessory trailer tow hitch assembly and if equipped, the installation of a 15A fuse and new wire extension kit.

“As an interim step, Hyundai is also planning on removing the fuse to an equipped trailer tow hitch module to address the fire risk while in operation and parked. This remedy will be offered at no cost for all affected customers, if necessary”, he added.
