The long-awaited flyovers and underpasses at Kutchery Chowk in Rawalpindi are expected to open for traffic before Eid al-Fitr, offering relief to commuters facing heavy congestion at one of the city’s busiest intersections.

According to a report by Dawn, the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) is completing road construction on the flyovers and underpasses as part of the Rs14 billion Kutchery Chowk remodelling project.

The update came during a visit by a technical inspection team, which reviewed the project’s progress and technical aspects.

Officials Review Progress of Project

The inspection was carried out by a technical team from the National Engineering Services Pakistan (Nespak), along with the FWO Project Director, Col Akber, and retired Brig Ijaz Qamar Kiani. Officials from the Punjab Highways Department also accompanied the team.

During the visit, engineers conducted a detailed assessment of the project’s structural work, traffic management design, and quality control measures.

According to officials quoted by Dawn, around 70 percent of the project has been completed, while asphalt work on the roads has already begun.

Beautification and Lighting Work Underway

Authorities said parallel work is also underway to improve the project’s surrounding environment.

According to the project briefing, the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) has started beautification efforts around the flyovers and underpasses, including:

  • Tree plantation and development of green belts
  • Installation of modern lampposts
  • Landscaping along the corridor

These improvements aim to enhance the area’s visual appeal while supporting smoother traffic flow.

Traffic Flow and Design Improvements

During the inspection, the Nespak team also reviewed traffic flow plans after the project’s completion.

Officials examined the movement of heavy vehicles and public transport, including the maneuverability of electric buses at U-turn points, and suggested minor design adjustments to improve future traffic management.

The team expressed satisfaction with the quality of work and noted that timelines are being closely monitored to ensure the project progresses according to schedule.

More Underpasses Planned on Peshawar Road

Separately, officials announced plans to construct three additional underpasses on Peshawar Road at:

  • Race Course Park Chowk
  • Army Graveyard Chowk
  • Charing Cross

Work on these underpasses is expected to begin after the Eid holidays, with authorities aiming to complete the project within about 70 days.

What Comes Next

Officials say the Kutchery Chowk project is expected to be fully completed by April 30. Still, the main flyovers and underpasses will be opened to traffic earlier to provide relief to motorists before Eid.

Once operational, the redesigned junction is expected to significantly ease congestion on key routes linking Peshawar Road, Old Airport Road, Rashid Minhas Road, and the inner city areas of Rawalpindi.
