Punjab’s rail sector is set for a major upgrade after the provincial government and Pakistan Railways signed an MoU for a fast train between Lahore and Rawalpindi, along with a wider network of new and modernized rail routes across the province.
The agreement was signed by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi. The 2-hour-15-minute Lahore-Rawalpindi target is the headline, but the MoU also includes a broader rail expansion plan across Punjab.
The MoU is not limited to one flagship route. It also includes eight additional local and regional rail corridors to improve mobility across Punjab and beyond.
Lahore-Rawalpindi First Fast Train
The proposed Lahore-Rawalpindi fast train is being presented as a major step toward modernizing railway travel in Pakistan. If launched as planned, it would sharply reduce travel time between two of the country’s most important cities and offer a faster alternative for business, family, and official travel.
For regular travelers, the biggest draw is simple: a much shorter rail journey between Lahore and Rawalpindi. A 2-hour-15-minute rail journey would mark a major shift in how passengers view intercity train travel on this corridor.

MoU Covers 9 Railway Routes
Under the agreement, modern train services are planned on nine routes in total. Alongside the Lahore-Rawalpindi fast train, the project includes eight additional corridors to strengthen regional and intercity connectivity.
Some of the announced routes include:
- Shahdara to Narowal — 79 km
- Narowal to Sialkot — 62 km
- Raiwind, Kasur, Pakpattan to Lodhran — 370 km
- Sheikhupura, Jaranwala to Shorkot — 220 km
- Faisalabad via Chak Jhumra and Shaheenabad — 68 km
- Kot Addu, Dera Ghazi Khan to Kashmore — 303 km
These routes show that the plan extends beyond central Punjab into southern areas as well, giving the project much broader public significance.

Why This Matters for Punjab
The agreement signals a larger push to modernize railway infrastructure and revive rail as a practical transport option. Better rail links can improve travel times, ease pressure on roads, and provide more reliable movement between major cities and secondary urban centers.
The project also has an economic angle. Improved rail connectivity can support trade, labor mobility, and access between commercial hubs across Punjab. That makes the announcement relevant not only to passengers, but also to businesses and regional development planners.
But the real question is this: How quickly will the project move from signing to execution?
What Happens Next
The signing of the MoU gives the project political and administrative backing, but the next phase will matter more. Travelers will now be looking for a formal implementation timeline, operational details, and updates on infrastructure work.
For now, the announcement marks one of the most ambitious rail transport plans unveiled for Punjab in recent years. If the fast train and supporting routes move ahead as promised, they could reshape regional rail travel across the province.
Millions Expected to Benefit
The wider plan is expected to benefit around 90 million people across nine railway routes, giving the project significance beyond one flagship service. That gives the project scale far beyond a single premium or high-visibility train service.
If implemented efficiently, the broader network could improve everyday travel for passengers across multiple districts while also strengthening rail transport’s long-term role in Punjab.
