Today we have a fascinating owner’s review of a bright yellow Vespa Side Car owned and modified by Shaikh Obaid-Ur-Rehman. Let’s see how he transformed an ordinary Vespa into this unique-looking three-wheeler.

Introduction

Obaid bought an old, beat-up 1971 Vespa in Karachi and modified it himself in his workshop. Obaid was inspired by the movie Munna Bhai MBBS and searched online for reference pictures of the final product.

This is Obaid’s second attempt at modifying a scooter with a sidecar. The previous project involved a 1965 model Vespa and a sidecar.

Total Cost

Unlike others, Obaid preferred metal framework over fiber framework for rider’s safety. He believes that a metal framework provides safety to the riders in case of an accident even if it adds to the weight of the bike.

The cost of the whole modification is largely based on the availability of spare parts. Obaid prefers Italian auto parts for modification as they are affordable and durable. It takes at most 3 months to complete the whole project. Modifications also include the addition of steel bars, lights, and chroming.

The total cost in the current market would be around Rs. 4 lacs to 4.5 lacs for the whole project.

Engine & Maintenance

This Vespa sidecar is equipped with a two-stroke, 150cc engine that supports a 2/8 ratio of oil to petrol. It also requires a regular oil change and maintenance to avoid engine seize. The new fuel types are unleaded so the addition of oil is necessary to make it compatible with the old Vespa engine.

Final verdict

Obaid acknowledges that the Vespa sidecar is not a vehicle for daily commute. It is now only cherished by auto enthusiasts who are willing to pay huge amounts of money for their passion. That’s why he not only modifies his own motorbikes but also understands the needs of other fanatics like him. He runs his own workshop and also takes orders from clients to modify the vehicles of their choice.
