ISLAMABAD: A proposal is under review to extend the Murree glass train project, potentially linking Islamabad International Airport to the popular hill station via Faizabad, according to a pre-feasibility briefing shared with the Capital Development Authority (CDA). DAWN reported.

Proposed Route and Extension

The current concept, backed by the Punjab government, envisions a 40-kilometre elevated rail line from Lake View Park near Bhara Kahu bypass to Pindi Point in Murree. The proposed extension adds a 13-kilometre elevated stretch connecting Faizabad to the Bhara Kahu station, creating a direct link from the airport using existing metro infrastructure.

Consultation and Planning Phase

A CDA official confirmed that discussions are underway between Punjab authorities and NESPAK, the engineering consultant assigned to the study. While still in the preliminary stages, the CDA is preparing to move toward a full feasibility study that will outline cost estimates, alignment, and timelines.

Potential Impact on Tourism and Mobility

Officials believe the extended rail line could significantly benefit tourists, foreign delegations, and local residents by reducing congestion and improving access to Murree. The study also notes that the region’s terrain at elevations around 2,200 metres is considered manageable based on similar mountain rail projects like the British-era Shimla line.

What’s Next?

The project will soon enter a detailed feasibility phase before seeking formal approval. Once completed, the study will provide insights into budget requirements, construction stages, and projected ridership.
