Earlier, we reported that the government has proposed applying Federal Excise Duty (FED) on luxury electric vehicles (EVs) priced above Rs 2 crore under Budget 2026-27.
However, luxury EVs are not the only category covered under the proposed FED changes. The government has also announced a revision in FED for the following vehicles:
- Imported vehicles between 2,000cc and 3,000cc
- Locally assembled and imported SUVs between 2,000cc and 3,000cc
- All vehicles with engine capacities of 3,000cc and above
Since FED already applies to all these vehicle categories, the announcement appears to indicate a revised or increase in the FED.
