Recently, on June 20th a new order has been issued by the Supreme Court, according to which, all the public institutions are required to adhere to a uniform policy regarding the use of luxury cars and their issuance. The services and the administrative department has been directed to ensure compliance of the orders strictly.
Defying orders of the Supreme Court (SC), those vehicles are still being used by officials in the CM House, the police department and other public offices. However, during the hearing, the Advocate General informed the court about the 149 luxury cars that have been taken into custody and were shifted to the government pool.
The CJP Mian Saqib Nisar also raised concerns like where those cars will be kept and under which rule these cars would be used in the future? The provincial government submitted a new notification regarding the use of luxury cars. The notice said that these cars could only be used for under a daily rent of PKR 25,000 for special purposes only. SC did not allow the provincial government to rent out cars. Therefore, SC reprimanded Sindh Government on renting case of luxury cars. The Chief Justice of Pakistan declared this notice regarding use of luxury cars, illegal. The hearing has been adjourned till June 28.
There is an expectation of strict action by Supreme Court in this matter. The trend of using extra-luxurious cars by the high-profile government officials is not something new in Pakistan, but there are certain laws every official needs to follow. The provincial government has been reluctant in this regard for decades.
According to the law, cars up to a capacity of only 1300 cc are allowed to any high-ranked government officer whereas, cars in government pool are entirely over 1300 cc. It is pertinent to mention here that all government officials who use luxury cars such as Toyota Land Cruiser, Prado, Vigo and Fortuner are violating the law.
