The City Traffic Police Lahore (CTPL) has imposed a complete ban on loader and Qingqi rickshaws on Canal Road.
According to Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore, Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi, the decision follows growing concerns about road safety.
The traffic police highlighted that loader rickshaws frequently carry oversized, dangerously protruding goods, making them a ticking time bomb for fatal accidents.
On the other hand, slow-moving Qingqi rickshaws severely choke traffic on this high-speed artery, creating massive bottlenecks.
The Crackdown Details
The traffic police aren’t taking this lightly. Special deployment teams have been stationed at key bottlenecks along Canal Road, including:
- Dharampura
- Mughalpura
- Thokar Niaz Baig
Furthermore, the CTO has ordered a parallel crackdown on passenger auto-rickshaw drivers who dangerously seat extra passengers in the driver’s seat. Authorities have warned that traffic wardens found to be negligent in enforcing this ban will face strict departmental action.
What’s the Alternative?
Don’t worry, these three-wheelers aren’t completely kicked off the map. To avoid putting a total halt to public transport and local goods transport, loader and Qingqi rickshaws are still permitted to use the service roads running parallel to Canal Road.
This isn’t the first time Lahore’s traffic authorities have tried to banish slow-moving rickshaws from signal-free corridors to improve lane discipline and safety. However, with special checkpoints now active and higher authorities directly monitoring compliance, it looks like the traffic police mean serious business this time.
