OGRA Dismisses Viral Rumours of Massive Fuel Price Hike

579

Pakistan’s Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has dismissed social media claims suggesting a sharp increase in petrol and diesel prices.

According to a report by Associated Press of Pakistan, the regulator clarified that no summary recommending a petrol hike of Rs73.40 per litre or a diesel increase of Rs84.95 per litre had been sent to the Prime Minister for approval.

OGRA described the circulating posts as “completely baseless and misleading”, urging citizens not to rely on unverified information shared online.

What Triggered the Confusion

The rumours gained traction shortly after the government recently increased petrol and diesel prices by Rs55 per litre, a move linked to volatility in international oil markets.

Fuel price adjustments in Pakistan typically occur every two weeks and are recommended by OGRA before final approval by the federal government.

Why Fuel Price Rumours Spread Quickly

Fuel prices directly affect transport costs, ride-hailing fares, and logistics across Pakistan. That means even a rumoured increase can trigger widespread concern among motorists and businesses.

Authorities say the best approach is to rely on official notifications from OGRA or the Ministry of Finance rather than on viral social media posts.

For now, no additional fuel price hike has been proposed or approved, according to OGRA’s latest clarification.

Motorists should wait for the next official fuel price review cycle before expecting any changes.
