Pakistan’s major highways and motorways are set to receive a technology upgrade as the government plans to introduce Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and cashless toll collection across key routes.
Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has directed authorities to modernize highway operations by integrating cameras, security systems, communication networks, and electronic tolling under a unified digital framework.
M2 Motorway to Be Included in ITS Program
During his visit to the National Highways and Motorway Police Headquarters, the minister ordered the immediate inclusion of the M2 Motorway in the Intelligent Transportation System program.
Under the plan, monitoring cameras, security infrastructure, and communication systems will be connected to improve traffic management, road monitoring, and overall travel safety.
A major part of this upgrade will be the introduction of a cashless and free-flow electronic toll collection system on major highways. The system aims to reduce waiting time at toll plazas and provide smoother travel for motorists.
Link with the Safe City System
The minister also directed that the new electronic tolling network should be linked with the Safe City security framework.
According to officials, integrating transport monitoring with security systems can help authorities manage traffic more effectively and support law enforcement operations.
Better Facilities at Motorway Service Areas
Apart from digital upgrades, the government has also directed improvements in motorway facilities.
The minister instructed that Motorway Police presence should be ensured at all service areas, with standardized facilities for passengers.
He also ordered the availability of:
- Rescue 1122 teams
- Fire brigade units
- Fully equipped ambulances
at motorway and national highway service areas to improve emergency response.
Safety Measures for Northern Routes
Special attention has also been directed toward tourist routes and mountainous highways.
Authorities have been instructed to improve safety standards on roads, including:
- Jaglot-Skardu Road
- Mansehra-Kaghan-Naran Road
- Murree Expressway
The planned measures include installing safety guard rails and upgrading temporary IBEX rest points into permanent rest areas for tourists and transporters.
These upgrades indicate a broader shift toward technology-based highway management in Pakistan, combining digital monitoring, faster toll systems, and improved emergency facilities for road users.
