Why Pakistan’s Petrol Queues Persist Despite Stable Supply

A reporting failure at over 12,000 petrol pumps is causing artificial shortages across Pakistan following the petrol price hike amid the Middle East Crisis.

According to a report by The Express Tribune and Pakistan Today, the culprit isn’t a global shortage, but missing data from the thousands of fuel stations.

Here’s why consumers are still lining up and what you can do to avoid long waits.

The Internal Crisis: The 12,000-Pump Data Gap

While the global war explains the price, the Cabinet Committee to Monitor Petrol Prices just revealed why you’re still seeing queues.

Out of over 12,000 pumps nationwide, data reporting is ‘below expectations’.

According to The Express Tribune, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb slammed OGRA and PSO for lethargic integration. Currently, even the state-owned PSO has integrated only 60% of its network into the real-time digital dashboard.

PakWheels Insight: When a price hike is expected, market manipulators hide their cheap stock to sell it at the new, higher rate, creating artificial supply issues for the public.

Current Stock Position

According to the Government of Pakistan, there is no physical shortage, only a monitoring problem.

Fuel Type Current Stock Cover Status
High-Speed Diesel 25 Days Stable
Petrol (Mogas) Sufficient Monitored
Crude Oil 12 Days Imports Scheduled

The FIA has now been activated. Joint teams from OGRA, the FIA, and the Petroleum Division are being deployed to stations (starting in Islamabad) to physically verify stocks and stop illegal hoarding.

Not Forgetting the Global Angle

The recent petrol price surge of Rs. 458.41 and Diesel to Rs. 520.35 is a direct outcome of the US-Israel-Iran war.

The regional war has turned the Strait of Hormuz into a bottleneck, sending shipping and insurance costs through the roof for every barrel reaching Pakistan.

What You Can Do as a Daily Fuel Consumer?

Claim Your Subsidy

Motorcyclists can now register for a monthly subsidy through the Maryam Ko Batayn App (Punjab) or Dastak (KP). Your bike must be registered in your name to qualify.

Verify Before You Drive

Use the OGRA Digital Dashboard to check station stocks, but treat it as a guide; only 60% of PSO pumps are currently reporting live data.

Report Hoarding

If a station claims to be dry while stocks are full, report it immediately via the Pakistan Citizens’ Portal. Joint FIA/OGRA teams are currently prioritizing these reports for raids.

Budget for Inflation

With Diesel at Rs. 520, expect a 15–20% hike in grocery prices and transport fares this month. Use state-run public transport where possible, as many routes in Punjab and Islamabad have been made free or subsidized for the next 30 days.

The Bottom Line

While the Middle East conflict has fundamentally reset the price of fuel in Pakistan, your struggle to find it at the pump is a crisis of transparency.

The deployment of the FIA to verify stock levels in real time marks a critical shift toward accountability.

As a consumer, your best defense in this volatile market is to stay informed, utilize the available monthly subsidies in your province, and report irregularities, because in 2026, data visibility is just as essential as the fuel itself.
