Petrol Price Update – Hike or Drop Tonight?

May 15, 2025 – It’s that time again. Petrol price in Pakistan is set to be revised tonight, and as always, the public is holding its breath. Every two weeks, the government adjusts fuel prices based on global trends and local economic needs. But this time, predictions are mixed – and that’s adding to the suspense.

Possible Decrease in Petrol Price ?

Some reports are hinting at good news. Petrol prices could drop by Rs. 3.5 per litre, and high-speed diesel (HSD) might see a Rs. 7 per litre reduction. The reason behind this expected cut is a recent dip in global oil prices, with international rates falling by $1.5 to $3 per barrel in the past two weeks.

This could offer a small but welcome relief for the masses already burdened by rising inflation.

Or an Unexpected Hike?

On the flip side, other sources suggest the government might increase petrol and diesel prices by over Rs. 4 per litre. The aim? To raise Rs. 35 billion to support local oil refineries, adjust sales tax gaps, and boost profits for Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).

A draft proposal even discussed levying a 3–5% sales tax on fuel. However, it was shelved due to the lack of agreement with the IMF, which must approve any changes to GST rates. Applying the standard 18% GST could have spiked prices by Rs. 45/litre – a move the government clearly wants to avoid.

In the background, both OMCs and fuel dealers are pushing for higher per-litre margins. OGRA has recommended increases of Rs. 1.13 for OMCs and Rs. 1.40 for dealers, aiming to ensure the sustainability of fuel supply across the country.

With contrasting reports, it’s unclear which way the prices will swing. A slight relief or a new burden – we’ll know for sure once the government makes the official announcement tonight.

So, whether you’re planning to fill up your tank now or tomorrow, stay updated and be prepared for either outcome.
