According to the latest reports and social media buzz, Pakistan’s current usable petrol reserves have dipped to around 379,442 tonnes. That sounds like a massive number; it translates to roughly 14 to 15 days of consumption at current demand.
However, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has stepped in just in time to curtail panic amongst people.
OGRA And NCMC Step In to Calm the Waters
The National Coordination and Management Council (NCMC) held an emergency high-level meeting with Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik, OGRA, and Customs officials to defuse the situation.
The good news?
The authorities have officially assured the public that there are ample fuel reserves in the country to meet demand. They claim the supply bottlenecks raised by the OCAC have been thoroughly resolved. Interestingly, OGRA’s analysis confirmed that the recent demand spike was largely driven by petrol stations and dealers hoarding fuel in anticipation of a price hike.
To tackle this, the government has directed provincial authorities to crack down hard on hoarders and make sure the pumps keep running smoothly.
Why the Sudden Anxiety?
With international oil prices climbing amid tensions over global shipping bottlenecks, such as the Strait of Hormuz, rumors of a fresh local price hike might prompt consumers to rush to petrol pumps to fill up, triggering early panic-buying. However, OGRA’s press release assures the public that there is no fuel supply shortage.
Final Thoughts
While the government’s quick reassurances and anti-hoarding crackdown offer some peace of mind, the real test will be at the petrol pumps over the next few days. For now, there’s no need to panic-buy, but keeping a healthy cushion in your fuel tank is always a smart move to avoid any sudden, frustrating surprises. Let’s hope the authorities keep their word and resolve these logistics issues for good so we can keep our wheels rolling without any hiccups!
